Next season's QB

Competition is:

I haven't heard anything about Jay Jones, really ever. Looks like he was a late addition to the class last year - committed two weeks before signing day. Highly rated athlete with offers from Bama/Auburn/Florida. Listed at 6'0" 175 on our roster.

Honestly that film is more impressive to me than any of the other QBs on our roster next year. Reminds me of JT5's film with maybe slightly less top end speed and slightly more of an athlete look (where as JT5 looked like a QB who happened to also be the best athlete on the field). Great quickness and looks elusive like JT. Not a polished passer, but can sling it pretty well. Also looks comfortable throwing on roll outs which is good for us. Overall just looks like an option QB.

I'm worried that Lucas Johnson may be more similar to Vad than we want. Polished passer and great size / top end speed. But lacking in the burst/elusiveness department. To my admittedly untrained eye, that's where Vad failed. He was a little slow/clumsy in tight spaces and couldn't use his speed until he was in the open field. But we need some quickness back there to orchestrate the offense properly.

Jordan we've seen. Hopefully he'll sure up the passing and become more comfortable making reads so we don't have to shrink the playbook. I expect him to start against Tennessee like most others.

Marshall I haven't seen much either. But I assume he'll be the backup having two years in the system already.

why are people hyping up Lucas Johnson so much?

I remember reading on the hive the LJ ran an option based offense his three years of high school before switching to one that was focused more on passing. So he is already a solid passer and should be able to learn CPJs system quickly with his option background. He is not as elusive or fast as JT but still a running threat with good speed.

I'm starting to like Jay Jones more and more. Plus he's a fast kid from Alabama with an offer from Alabama and we saw how that turned out last time we made a guy like that our QB.

Good lawd he had some pretty runs and throws. Agree with your assessment.

Only question/concern I have is what kind of talent he was up against while at McAdory (the Yellow Jackets, btw). Uneducated guess is that it's a step down from what JT5 was facing at Prattville HS.

Same High School as Bo Jackson.

Apparently goes by Willie Beamen on Twitter

Hype Train Engaged

If it is LJ as starter next year, would be hilarious to see CPJ do more "traditional" dropback plays/routes. With his height, LJ would be able to see over the line more than any previous CPJ QB, so conceivably opens the door for the slant and dig routes.

Doubtful we will go to pistol formation, but I do think that from the base formation we would have a lot more designed pass plays where we fake the dive and he drops back and passes.

More than anything, in the competition between MJ, TM, LJ and JJ, I think it will boil down to WHO makes the right reads most consistently on the triple option play. Which one reacts the fastest in terms of pulling the ball at the mesh, and which one knows when to pitch to AB and when to keep.

How does Jordan being a type 1 diabetic affect him being an every down, every game Qb? Not trying to be ugly, I just don't have a clue how that would work out.

If he dealt with it throughout high school football without problems he'll most likely be able to handle it here.

Jay looks solid. Arm strength on display at 1:00, throwing on the run. Whether he can make the reads and orchestrate the O with confidence will be the determining factor, but the physical tools are definitely there to be another JT5. He shows breakaway speed, escape artistry, and the ability to hit the deep throws.

The guy who doesn't turn the ball over and can execute the base offense the best will be the starter regardless of how good of a passer he may be. I think CPJ learned his lesson with Vad Lee.

Good question. It is 6A Alabama football, they went 8-4. I don't know enough about Alabama high school football to provide any insight into how competitive it is.

Most importantly, how does it compare to 3A North Carolina football?

Agree with the first part. The second part is what worries me about Jordan as our QB. He hasn't shown the ability to be a passing threat whatsoever. That's why I'm honestly kind of hoping Lucas Johnson takes well to the option, because he definitely has the passing skillset to at least keep defenses honest.
Does Vad Lee have any eligibility left?
