Next season's QB

Good question. It is 6A Alabama football, they went 8-4. I don't know enough about Alabama high school football to provide any insight into how competitive it is.

Most importantly, how does it compare to 3A North Carolina football?

6A is the second biggest classification in Alabama and the talent faced there would be decent but not amazing. McAdory tends to be a middle of the road program (stuggle against the Birmingham programs). Prattville where JT5 came from was 7A but away from a lot of the stronger powers (Birmingham/mobile) but they still won the state champ. I drive by McAdory every day on the way to work, they have a huge Buzz on their fieldhouse you can see from the interstate, maybe that helped our recruiting.

I just wish we had a back up that had been really tested... like going into a hostile stadium on short notice and upsetting a ranked team with a great defense that has usually beaten us. That's a QB I could really get behind.

WTF is wrong with you guys? MJ has done nothing but win, but he hasn't looked good enough as he was winning for you lard butts. He even peeled off a you-can't-catch-me 50 yd TD run and some of you guys are still complaining he's not black enough.

He's the man until CPJ tells me otherwise.

I went back and rewatched the VT game, and I did feel better about the idea of MJ11 taking over next year. If he were named the starter today I would have two concerns: My biggest concern is how much he calls his own number, when a pitched ball would result in a TD or big gain. He seems solid on making the first read to the B-Back, and when to pull it from the mesh, it's the second read that he needs to perfect (when to keep and when to pitch to the A-back). Searcy/Lynch/Green will be severely underused if he doesn't learn when to pitch to them. In the VT game, he pitched it twice (both for big gains), but there were easily 3-4 other times when he should have. The second issue I have is he needs to become a better passer. Hopefully he'll work with the WRs a good deal in the off season as well (in 2014 JT would just go play pitch and catch with them over the summer).

Give the guy credit, this was only with a week's practice with the 1s, and I'm sure CPJ told him to be conservative. So, hopefully in Spring and Summer ball they will work on the timing, distance and chemistry and he can work on learning when to go to the 3rd option. And finally, he can work on throwing better. Not fired up that we are losing our QBs coach right now, but it is what it is.

Check out the breakdowns for yourself:

If Jordan and Mills can average 5 ypc, we won't have to worry about anything.

I will miss the Marshall lightning to Mills ' thunder.

If anyone else was in practices watching tevin throw that first spring, they wouldn't be so worried about MJ. He just needs some work to make defenses respect that threat. He also needs to improve his reads, but some of that is just getting more first team reps.

I'll say it again, the return of the midline is huge for our offense and having someone who gets positive yards consistently at the QB position allows us to match up better against teams like uga, miami, clemson, and vt because our line doesn't have to execute perfectly and can instead focus on firing off the ball.

We're less than a week removed from the season. I anticipate the next 8 months of StingTalk being rough on you.

IIRC CPJ said those were his calls not MJs. At least a lot of them.

This. It's harder for my untrained eye to tell if they were option plays or not based on whether he keeps or pitches (as it's not as simple as looking to see if they left a DL unblocked) and I didn't read that CPJ article, but it makes sense given the other play calls and game situation that CPJ wouldn't want MJ pitching a ton in a game that we were going to win as long as we didn't turn it over. I remember one pitch right before halftime that went for ~25 yards to set up the TD that broke their backs. Could be that he figured a fumbled pitch wouldn't hurt us too badly with time ticking away? IDK.

Just seems to me that we were very vanilla against VT and maybe caught them napping on midline (or simply QB follows) since we hadn't run it much if at all with JT5 against them (or anybody else). Hopefully more reps will make MJ more comfortable next season and we can use the full playbook.

I hope you are right. I gladly welcome the return of the midline and QB follow plays. I hope we will be in less 3rd and long situations since with MJ11 we will run more and pass less, and probably go for it more on 4th down.

I remember this too, from the radio show after the game (or maybe the post game presser). I think the Spring Game will tell us as much as the VT game.

I feel like the worst QB that we've had was V** L** (aside from one Gardner Webb game), so I think we'll be OK at QB.

I don't think JT was even hurt. I think Pawl just held him out in favor of MJ because he knew they wouldn't be prepared for MJ running midline and follow all game long. JT has played OK against VT but definitely not a guaranteed win. Probably helped to rest JT down the stretch, too.

I think it's hilarious that we don't run the midline all year, don't mention JT being injured, practice the midline all week in secret, and then swap quarterbacks right before the opening whistle. You know Bud Foster was in there at halftime yelling, "OKAY I KNOW WE DIDN'T PRACTICE THIS, THIS WEEK, BUT LIKE THREE YEARS AGO I HAD THIS AWESOME GAME PLAN VS THE MIDLINE AND YOU'VE GOT FOUR MINUTES TO LEARN IT."

Mind games.

Coach blaming is the #1 indicator that the one doing the blaming is a dumbass.

Depends on the Coach and the Blamer, you flamer.

I can blame Paul Hewitt all day long and still be better than you.

Should have come out straight wishbone

Assuming its Matthew Jordan, how does it change this offense from JT? I love how hard MJ runs but I dont like how he never pitches the ball. Not sure if that's what he was coached to do at the time or if he naturally doesnt pitch it? I do think 3rd and 4th and short will be unstoppable for us again. A return to the Nesbitt years! Nesbitt was almost automatic for 3rd/4th and 1.

Is there any chance MJ doesnt win the job, though? Who's his competition?
We're gonna midline the öööö out of everyone

After watching each on "film" LJ is the better choice. Much, much stronger arm. Each runs about the same with perhaps the slight edge to LJ.
