The Division I Council meeting is over. The council approved everything -- it will vote in April -- recommended by the Football Oversight Committee, including April-June early visits. Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said a June early signing period is off the table and that he expects the December window to meet approval from the conference commissioners. Bowlsby remains hopeful to later find another early signing window to supplement or replace December.

What's the point of having a December signing period? Only a few weeks from NSD. A summer signing period is what is needed.

I'm of the opinion it doesn't matter when kids can sign. It's just gonna push up all the histrionics around recruiting to that new date.

December signing is a stupid idea. Coaches like it so they can seal the deal two months earlier and don't have to kiss up to verbal commits through Christmas. What we need is a July signing period - a week around July 20. Coaches will have seen Junior highlights and summer camp performance. If they want to offer and the kid wants to sign this is great for the athlete - he has his scholarship and recruiting is over and he can get started on his senior year of football August 1st. The college coaches would hate this idea because it would just add to their already long schedule. But, they make enough money and can get some time off in the late Spring, early Summer.

Coaches will be super busy in December if they have a bowl or playoff game. Kids should sign the day they commit with an out clause if the school gets put on probation or the coach leaves.

What if the school could only sign like 5-10 players during this period? I don't know if this is a smart idea or a dumb idea, maybe it could work. Could be a good way for a school to really show they are committed to certain players.

It all has to do with coaching changes. The NCAA is trying to protect kids who want to play for a certain coach in case that coach's job is on the hot seat. If he signs in June, coach has a bad season, he could face an obligation of coming to a school whose coach has moved on. If he signs in December, more than likely that isn't an issue. Of course you will have kids that want to sign with the school over the coach, but they look at those kids as not having a problem with either date.

Yeah that's a pretty good point with respect to Dec versus June. But I still don't see any value in Dec as opposed to Feb 1st. I guess maybe they are trying to avoid schools and coaches pulling a kids offer because someone better comes along? But if that is the issue, it can happen in the days leading up to December just as easily as it can leading up to Feb 1.

If anything, Feb 1 is better because it gives coaches an opportunity to recruit heavily after their seasons wrap up, rather than having to do it during the season, potentially distracting from their day to day activities.

Screw these signing periods. They should allow the recruit to sign the offer at any time after it's extended and let the schools pull an offer at any time it is still unsigned.

This is too simple I guess. And makes too much sense.

Agree! Just commit and sign the same day beginning August 1 of their senior year. If you don't have a starting date, the SEC would sign them in the ninth grade.

I don't mind the idea of limiting each school to a certain number in the early period.
