There is a gentleman in Alabama that is the son of a man who had season tickets for something like 60 years. His last name is Duling. His father was a EE and in to everything electronic. He's been sending me his fathers VHS collection to digitize, but there is also whole bunch of reel-to-reels as well. It took me a while to find a working reel-to-reel, but now that I have one there are about 50 more to do. Not all are football games though. As I come across more, I will upload. I am working on a way to put them on YouTube.
Not all heroes wear capes. Hat's off to you, good sir.

You are a good man! As many on here know, I am the resident Dodd groupie, and I am working on a book in that regard. I want to thank all the people on here who have been very helpful with additional info....I need all I can get! It is a passion of mine to never let the wonder of the Dodd era get lost!

What kind of condition are the tapes in?
Are they shedding coating/oxide?
Most are in decent shape. Only seen a couple places where the coating is coming off. The 54 Cotton bowl tape has given me the most headaches. I had to splice that one. I think I'm going to send that one in to get professionally done.

EDIT: Found another copy of the cotton bowl tape. Will be converting that soon.

I am saying, in response to another poster, that the announcer was Thad Horton. Put a question mark at the end of my other sentence, because IDK.

Only know that Al was not doing that game and, it would appear, that he had the "gig" at that time.

Maybe he had a family emergency, or was sick. IDK

Perhaps your research, or knowledge of that particular game broadcast, could give us a definitive answer?
I have the AJC article from Al's retirement in 1992.
He was hired to do basketball PBP and was a second guy for Football radio.

I think Thad Horton was after Bob Fulton??

There's a guy named John who worked for WSB other wise...lemme check the GA radio hall of fame.

Been a long time since I looked that stuff up.

Bob Fulton
Milo Hamilton

Al wasn't the lead with those guys I think.

I always loved Big Al's sign off when doing the daily sports on WGST: "and remember, if you can't take part in a sport, sports fans.....be one!"

Thad Horton was some kind of man... grew up in Atlanta, went to Darlington, got like 5 degrees from Emory then did grad work at Harvard. Was a B-29 pilot in the war. Was an advertising guy for Coca Cola at McCann Erickson. Had a character in Deliverance named after him (he was good friends with James Dickey.) And was the Sports Director at WSB.

Unfortunately, that old Atlanta accent is almost a thing of the past.

That's a fact! Watch the old Bobby Jones instructional tapes from the 30s.... good stuff and fabulous accent!

The late, great Dr. Sid Williams was a friend and a native Atlantan from that era. It is my favorite Southern accent. Gentle, refined, soft. Alas, it is Gone With the Wind.

Cool. If you need any help with anything, let me know. Assuming we're talking about 1/4" tape here, then I have a TEAC X7 deck.

Will do. I just got an Akai GX-4000D. I have a couple 10" reels to do that won't work on the Akai, so I might hit you up if it works on your setup.

There's a group on Facebook called "Atlanta recording community". Someone there probably has the deck to do it.

Not missed in your prior post, that is an impressive setup you have. My audio mixing stuff isn't nearly that complicated. I use Audacity for my audio editing and splicing, and Avidemux for my video.

Thanks for the advice. I have found a couple companies that will do it, but they cost $60 per tape. When I get to that point, I'll look in to it. Right now, I am still working on mono recordings from the '50s. Pretty easy as long as the tape doesn't need splicing.

I've enjoyed listening to all three of these games. Football was certainly different back then. I can't believe that, with 54 seconds left in the game and Tech leading 7 to 3, Georgia punted. Can anybody explain why they did that?
