Most Overrated/Underrated GT players ever?

To say he is overrated would be to imply he did not equal/ exceed your expectations.

What were yours for him?

I'm reading this question as overrated/underrated as described by current GT fans looking back. KR is often listed by fans as being one of their top 5 favorite players, etc. I just think his actual value doesn't line up with where I see Tech fans putting him.

Triggered. Thanks to your video, I re-watched the 2009 4th down drop for the first time in 8 years. DT had been such a beast that day (as the video amply demonstrates). That drop was so dang painful.

And I'd forgotten that we were down by 6 not 7 at the time.
My bad. I almost put a trigger warning but figured that people might see it coming because of the "lowlights" title.

If you can believe it, when I saw the 'lowlights' title I thought, "What lowlights? DT was awesome." I really really try hard not to think about that moment.

Really? Top 5?

Another definition is that the player was not as good or as bad as people seem to think they were.

I don't think Kelly is either over or underrated. He is pretty universally liked by fans because of his fearlessness and his last name. Oh, and this:

AT TECH: All-ACC return specialist and the leading punt returner in Tech history . . . Set school records with 1,135 punt return yards on 112 returns . . . Both figures rank second in ACC history to Ledel George of NC State (125 returns, 1,191 yards) . . . Had a chance to break George?s record of 1,191 yard but missed his final two games with a sprained foot . . . Broke the Tech record for career punt return yards formerly held by his father, Randy Rhino (749) . . . Over his last two seasons, he returned 93 punts for 962 yards (10.3-yard average)

Having personally watched both play I think Randy was faster than Kelly but Kelly was fearless returning punts. Randy was an All American DB so the returns were just a sideline for him. Randy could run sideways as fast as he could run straight ahead, but Kelly played against better athletes.

good job, but I'm pretty sure that Danny was recruited as a DB which he played until Pepper showed up with the option.

True story.... we had a guy from Columbus named Rudy Allen as the starting QB for the Frog Team... in the 1973 Media Guide, Danny is listed as a DB.

Kelly had the advantage of the halo rule. He never called for a fair catch because of it, which was smart.

I knew Rudy well. He was the QB who got sacked at ND by... Rudy.

Underrated: Logan Walls, Robert Godhigh, Brad Jefferson, Jamea Thomas

Overrated: TJ Barnes, Travis Custis

Eric Hensderson was the real deal - not overrated - that BYU game when he couldn't catch his breath but kept balling over and over sealed my respect for him
- he'd hit the oxygen tank - walk on the field with his hands on his hips - - then go beast at the snap - - then look like he was gonna die all over again

Jimmy Dixon is one of my underrated - and I see why some think over instead
He came in with huge expectations then fell down the depth chart after an injury he never really recovered from - - but what I liked was that he embraced the fullback position and became an extremely selfless player - - blocked liked a man, never dropped a pass, & ran w power in short yardage
- - played a different role than he came here to play and never complained that I heard of - - I always appreciated the guy - liked his attitude

Andrew Economos - under rated
Never blew a long snap (a big damn deal) and made about half the tackles on punts afterward

I won't say over or under rated on the next guy - but Pat Carter got a lot more grief than he deserved
- he wasn't a CB but he was forced to play there - - better at WR but best of what was available at a position that wasn't his best strength - - I didn't think he was too great at CB but he took a LOT of grief for playing a position different than he wanted - - and he kept doing it anyway

A lot of those O'Leary / Gailey transistion guys that got booted were good

Travis Parker was a waste - good player we lost
Alfred Malone was the real deal - grades - I loved the fight the had in the 51-7 UGA game
- I don't usually applaud a breakdown in discipline but a lot of guys quit that day & he didn't

Bilbo may have been an NFL linebacker or safety - - Ace Ezimife might have been better at LB - - both were dead set on playing different positions until it was too late

Nesbit might still be playing safety had he switched - - although I loved where he did play

Gordon Clinkscale never got as much love as he should have - - but saved the NC State game against Rivers, TA McClendon, and a DL that had 5 (yes one back up) all go in the first 3 rounds a year later

Tony Hargrove was special - got booted in the transition - grades

Ather Brown - got over shadowed by Smith & Fox - very good player

I don't do over rated - no reason to put down a kid from GT
I appreciate most all of them

And

Everybody else in the NCAA also had the halo rule when Rhino was with us

They were *all* bigger & stronger - most faster - and they didn't do what he did

He set those records against a bunch of other people who played by the same rules he did

Kelly's respect was earned - not given

Kid had big balls

I'll go first:
Overrated: Eric Henderson. He was really good, but we had some guys after him that were better(Derrick Morgan).

Underrated: Gary Guyton; I'm sure some have forgotten about him. Awesome player. Also have to mention Laskey, Days, and KaMichael Hall.

That wasn't damn pass interference against BC. To HELL with Matt Ryan.

I'd go the other way on this one (overrated). Most GT fans consider him far more valuable than he actually was.
Honestly, the only thing I was thankful for Rhino was is that he didn't drop punts.

Underrated: Derrick Morgan

IMO he was one of the most dominant players I've ever seen play at GT. In 2008 we lost pretty much our whole DL and he had to take over and become THE guy. He had 12.5 sacks that year and the entire rest of our DL combined for 6. I'll never forget him emphatically ending the 2009 ACCCG against Clemson while getting held and beating triple teams.

I believe Danny was a QB in HS. He and Mike Johnson were both QB's in HS at the same time not 3 miles apart.
