Is 6 wins enough?

Threads like this show that ST is not really that divided on CPJ. (Some guys are just moaners. [joke incoming]) CPJ is going to be on everyone's hot seat if we have another losing season this year. Frankly, depending on the nature of the losses and to whom, I'd be pretty dissatisfied with 8-4. By this point in time, we should be winning the Coastal every two or three years. Four straight years outside contention – three of them, by hypothesis, far outside contention – doesn't get it done for me.

The only caveat to this would be if we soul-crush UGA. A stirring victory over UGA lifts all spirits, regardless of what transpired before that.

There are a lot of "what if" scenarios that could play out this year regarding putting CPJ on the hot seat and how hot that seat gets. Strict W-L, ACC W-L, UGA, Bowl, etc. If the season goes badly - whatever badly may be - we will definitely know he is on the hot seat by year's end.

I'm totally in agreement with all of that.

6-6 gets us a bowl and is enough to get CPJ another year.

It's also my prediction.
I'm not positive it would get him another year. If so, his seat would be on fire.

Either way, I don't expect that at all. Barring some significant injuries, I'd be pretty surprised if we win less than 8.

We were pretty damn close to the best team in the Coastal last year (still not sure we weren’t). Would not shock me at all to win the division this year. I’d say the most likely outcome is 8-4 (5-3) with the tough non-division schedule. 7 wins would be disappointing. 9-3 is well within reach.

Fuente is nothing special as we’ve shown with the win last year and the curb stomp two years ago. About 4 or 5 plays both ways separated our record from miamis last year. And if we can avoid crippling injuries for once the rest of the Coastal is not too worrisome.

Pass that pipe over to me.

nope... 7 regular season wins (4-4 ACC / 3-1 OOC) and a Bowl win... so it should be no less than 8 win... with a lil luck we could finish 9 or 10 wins after the bowl game!!

I don't think that he can go 6-6 this season and not have the seat flaming hot (or worse). While '15 can be excused due to an incredible # of injuries and at key positions no less, '17 was bad in losing so many games late and then the 2nd half collapses versus Dook and UVA. Having 3 seasons in 4 that are bad is not "acceptable" this far into a coach's tenure.

I think that the team will be better than that this season.
15’ is not just “excused”.. had talent. Ended up beating FSU so it’s not like it wasn’t doable. Finished 1-7 in the ACC. GTFO

I wouldn’t be exactly happy with 6 wins, but at least we would go bowling again.

Everyone else looks to be getting better around us and every game in conference is going to be a real fight.

The questions that keep me from thinking this an 8 win team are...

- Has Marshall improved in his option reads and passing?
- Can our young secondary hang with a system that’s going to put more pressure on them?
- Can our front 7 actually get consistent pressure?
- Will size on both lines doom us to getting out muscled against bigger teams?
- Can any of our WR’s get separation and make the most of their opportunities?

This team is definitely talented but lack of experience at WR and in the secondary along with an overall light and small team might limit us tremendously.

For me, the most important question, especially with this "new" D coordinator, is your 3rd one above. If the answer is "no", I expect a less than happy year. I am not rooting for that, but I just don't see where we have upgraded significantly our talent/depth at DL or LB. Tricks and mirrors do not work on D, generally.

Having a slightly better defensive coach and kicker last year could have done wonders for us record wise. We would have probably finished with 9 wins in the regular season, closer loss to uga, gotten whooped again by Clemson in the ACC championship, and had a decent bowl game to go to.

We can certainly do 9 wins this year and I would be extremely disappointed if we don’t. Enough to want to fire CPJ like I was feeling at the start of ‘14.

I’m calling for the O to be better, that might be two extra wins in of itself. God I hope the kicking game improves. And the D has to improve on shutting down those final drives at the end of the halves. We need to hit the QBs. Something we haven’tdone in 10 years. It doesn’t have to be sacks, but pressure and hits go a long way to help with those last 2 minute drives. I hope we can scheme our way to do that. Because we are undersized as usual.

If we can't win 6 games this year, we need to fire all the coaches, the AD, and quit playing football.
