Evaluating CPJ's road openers: 4-6, but a lot of disappointing losses and easy wins.
2008- W vs. B.C. 19/16
-This, tied with Duke '13, is the best road opening victory in CPJ's career to date.
2009- L vs. Miami 17/33
-The first of a slew of disappointing losses in road openers, this was an outlier compared to the rest of the schedule, and ended up being our biggest loss of the season.
2010- L vs. Kansas St. 28/25
-This is one of the absolute biggest atrocities in all of Georgia Tech football's history.
2011- W vs. MTSU 49/21
-This was a fun game to watch and probably the best our offense has been over a 5 game span during CPJ's tenure. Also this was an awesome game to go to, MTSU has a beautiful campus.
2012- L vs. VT 17/20
-Going into the season we thought we had a good team and defense. We played well, but this OT game will always go down as a missed chance for a huge victory.
2013- W vs. Duke 38/14
-Solid victory over what ended up being one of Duke's best teams of all-time. Duke went on to win 8 straight after losing to Pitt 58/55 the next week, including beating ranked VT and Miami. Tied with '08 BC as CPJ's best road opening win.
2014- W vs. Tulane 38/21
-I don't think we played very good in this game, and it was generally boring.
2015- L vs. ND 22/30
-Couldn't get anything going this whole game really. Extremely disappointing game with a ton of injuries and we only won one game from here out.
2016- L vs. Pitt 34/37
-Defense couldn't get a stop to save their lives. Really let this one get away from us, and it's a shame because there were so many awesome plays this game (Juene's catch and JJ's KRTD).
2017- L vs. Miami 24/25
-Maybe even more disappointing than the '09 road opener vs. Miami.
So as you see, CPJ has not fared very well in these road openers. He has taken care of the weaker opponents, but none of the better opponents other than Duke '13. So the real question is, where does USF lie? I say better than BC '08 but not as good as Pitt '16.
