I was researching the possibility of a Monken hire and what assistants he would bring vs. retain and came across something I couldn’t explain. Is there any reason why they’re allowed more than 10 assistant coaches? Navy has 14 as well.

But we don't want Monken. Let's get back to playing football. Let's find out if we can still compete playing real football.

You don't like the triple option. We get it. But to imply that we haven't been playing "real" football when we've gone to two Orange Bowls is asinine.

IIRC you were on here crying at halftime of the 2008 UGA game about how Tech had made such a huge mistake by hiring Johnson.

Enough threads about not wanting coaches to post there. Why do service academies get to have more coaches?

Government inefficiencies means they need 14 to do the job of 10. Much better than most agencies, actually.

Grad assistants who have military obligations maybe, like reserve duty, so they get allowed more due to drill, etc? Just shooting in the dark here.

I just looked in the NCAA bylaws:

11.7.4.1.4 Additional Coaches—National Service Academies. [FBS] National service academies
may employ four additional coaches. (Revised: 1/10/91 effective 8/1/92, 1/12/04 effective 8/1/04, 8/23/05)

Still not sure as to the why that rule was put into place.

Service academies don't have scholarship limits because essentially every student is on scholarship. So that means their rosters are huge. The academies have so many players they have JV teams that play DIII schools and the like.

All those extra players call for more coaches.

Here's an article about it.

lol. I love how a guy born in the 40s thinks the current clutch and grab scheme by linemen, ineligible men downfield, pick plays, and screens is real football but lining up under center and running at around and through people is for wussies!
