Bowl wanted? If so he really demonstrated a lack of faith in GT fans, especially being CPJ's last game and GT fans wanting to turn out for his swan song. I just want to make sure that it's true and then I'd be ready to throw TStsn under the bus.

Throw him under the bus for what? We played a more important game against a bigger name opponent with a coach we all hate on November 10 in Midtown ATL, and there couldn't have been more than 30,000 GT fans physically in the stadium. I don't know what the Belk ticket guarantee is, do you? It was rumored to be nearly 20,000 last year.

Sounds to me like Belk and UVa put this deal together several weeks ago.

I doubt anything we could have done over the weekend would have put us in that bowl. The blame for that falls squarely on Swofford.

It seems unlikely to me. I didn't think schools even had the option to not guarantee ticket sales -- I thought they were required to buy the allotted amount no matter what, even if they have to do it themselves due to lack of fan interest.

GT has what, around 25K-30K season ticket holders, and an allotment of what, 5K tickets for students, walk-ups have to be low, no idea what that figure would look like.

So if the Belk guarantee is 20K, you're banking on what, 3/4 of your season ticket base, and a probable small percentage of students who actually show up for games to, first of all want to go to Charlotte, have the time to make plans for Charlotte, be willing to purchase tickets, hotel, meals, etc.

If we were playing in Charlotte I would be there, I would have traveled to probably any bowl with exception to El Paso and Detroit.

Thing is, Belk bowl put out a serious question on reddit asking voters what teams they would like to see in the game. GT/Auburn was the overwhelming favorite, yet Belk bowl basically did not even acknowledge it. GT got 74.2% of ACC team votes, and Auburn got 71.3% of the SEC team votes. Next closest to either was 8.5%. That was Pitt for the ACC selection and USCe for the SEC. UVA was 5th in the ACC voting with 3.1%.

Belk Bowl is worried about ticket sales. If we wouldn't agree to take on the same number of guaranteed sales that UVA would, then they did the right thing for their bowl game. Who gives a öööö about a twitter poll? Is that how you would run your business?

Question will be if UVA actually meets those sales. Though if they don't, do they take the loss or does the bowl?

I remember a few years ago the Music City Bowl passed over Tech for Virginia for the very same reason. Check that attendance. One of MCB's lowest attended games. Seems like we could have used that in our argument.

Why do we think the Belk Bowl guarantee was 20k?

Don't forget to mention that (by your numbers) we are counting on ~1/3 of our season ticket holders to buy Quick Lane Bowl tickets.

How many Tech fans showed up for the ACCCG the last time we went Charlotte? I thought we were well represented by our number there.

We were also having a MUCH better year. Attendance is largely dependent on performance. Just like 99% of other teams.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-f...ion-with-largest-attendance-drop-in-34-years/

From the link above...
~in 2017 college football saw its largest drop in attendance in 34 years, to an average of 42,203.
~from peak attendance in 2008, an average of 46,971, attendance was down 10 percent over the nine year span.
~the SEC experienced the largest drop, it's sharpest decline in 25 years, followed by the ACC.
~in 2017 bowl game attendance was 40,506 for 40 games, a 23 percent drop from 2010.

The article points the blame finger at technology, which is not surprising.

Anyway, with so many bowl games, 39 this year, let's be honest, most of them crap, it's no wonder attendance is dramatically down.

From a bowl perspective, there are just too many bowls.

From a TStan perspective, after reading this article, and others like it, I have to say I do not blame him for not committing to the Belk minimal allotment for sales.

UVA would eat it if they promised to sell that many.

If it would of indeed been the case that if we could not meet that guarantee then GT would be the one to eat the cost, then I am a lot more supportive of TStan in that. Given that one of the things we want is for more resources to be provided for whatever coach we hire, I can dig trying to be conservative toward moves that could result in lost money.

The difference in bowl payouts between the Belk and the QuickLane would more than cover the full cost of the 20,00o tickets. If we actually passed on the Belk bowl because of the ticket guarantee, we should fire the AD.
