Is TStan an asshat?

But CPJ ISN'T Georgia Tech. Never was.
CPJ isn't GT, and shouldn't be. But he has a good point - the "identity" of GT football over the past decade is very different than the one most of these guys were a part of, so I understand the feeling of wanting to "go back to the glory days" even though the glory days (talking post-Dodd here) were just about as successful (or a bit less so) than the recent ones.

It is what it is, though. Ultimately Stansbury will make the decision he thinks is best and we'll have to live with it. If the new coach can run a clean program, graduate players, represent Tech well, and win games, then I'll be happy regardless of how he does it.

GT's record with Whisenhunt as a player:

1981 1-10
1982 6-5
1983 3-8
1984 6-4-1

He represented the institute quite well--had some great seasons, a couple of poor ones, his players graduated and weren't knuckleheads off the field. And yet, a portion of the fanbase grew sour on him due to his style of offense.

I hope that the new coach runs a clean program and wins games like CPJ did (for the most part) regardless of his style of offense. However, I do feel strongly that even if GT recruits better with a new coach, that new coach won't be out scheming the teams w/more talent on the schedule running the same "pro" offense. I would like to see an offense (regardless of the style) that helps to scheme away some of the talent deficiencies vis a vi the better teams on the schedule.

The TO is the excuse. I don’t remember anybody grumbling about the offense for the first two years.

Nobody likes losing and people look for explanations for losses. The option and it’s purported recruiting effects became their explanation for our bad losses under CPJ.

Much like with fitness in evolutionary explanations, there’s no way to know if they’re right or not.

Football is changing (has changed?). The top 18 or twenty programs are going to collect stellar talent most of the years now and slug it out for the final four playoff slots. The remainder of the P5 schools and a sprinkling of the next tier will probably be about equal in athletic talent. Coaching and scheme will be important among those schools vying for national recognition, rankings, bowl games, fans, revenue. I think we have seen that scheme doesn't equalize anything when we are playing the top teams. It probably often does make the difference between 7-5 and 5-7---which is significant. But we can't sacrifice recruiting and defense and special teams for the sake of our offensive scheme as we have been doing. That is the main thing that needs to be addressed.

I think I understand the master plan now.

Swofford chose tStan to rep the ACC at the CFP committee to insure that he would not be available to lobby bowl officials during the bowl selection process. I'll give Swofford credit - he really thinks ahead.

Disagree w/the first sentence. Without a different scheme, CPJ doesn't have wins over Ugag or CU or Miami when he did. I do agree that the defense and special teams cannot be poor as they were at times under CPJ--can think of a few seasons right away where an average defense would have put GT much higher up the rankings.

I am however skeptical that a new coach will dramatically improve recruiting--there are big academic hurdles to overcome as well as a lack of resources in that area compared to the schools we play. Let's hope that the capital TStan has raised is going towards those things and not just buildings. Otherwise, I don't think that a new coach is going to be an improvement.

Swofford is playing chess and Stansbury is playing Connect Four.

Yes, it would be a shame if our student athletes missed out on ear buds and mp3 players, Quick Lane hoodies, and gift cards.
Nothing like screwing up Christmas with a trip to Detroit for a bag o' swag.

If CPJ isn’t GT than neither is any student who wasn’t a GT fan before attending. Most of us spent less time at GT than he did and probably did less for the school/program then he did. But whatever I understand people have irrational feelings and want to fit in with their buds so they’d prefer that we pass and öööö. It just feels dumb to me to say, “We need to get a new coach with some energy, whose going to recruit, and run a more modern offense.” How does that set us apart from any team within 1000 miles? How do we expect to play the same game as teams with many times our budget, many times our willingness to sacrifice standards for winning, and many times our willingness to shell out gobs of money for what should be a recreational activity? We can’t take the same strategy they do because we don’t even play the same game.

I’ll even go so far as to say we should keep the triple option as a protest against what college football hasn’t become. Do not deviate from it until actionable and significant reforms take place in the recruiting and payment sphere.

I like CPJ, don't get me wrong – but he is a paid employee of GT, and the blood sweat and tears he gave were given in exchange for millions of dollars. I, on the other hand, am a blood sweat and tears supporter who gives his time and energy and mental nerves for no recompense at all – in fact, I've spent to support this passion. I was around for decades before CPJ came along, and I'll be here for decades after he's gone. I appreciate everything he's done, but it's the players and their fans who make the program.

Glory days indeed. Throw in some motivational speeches from Curry and add Roof.

Serious question, considered making a new thread:

IS BILL CURRY INFLUENCING THIS HIRE?

It seems every time the “Tech Man” argument is brought up, his name is attached to it. Someone old enough to remember his tenure, please enlighten me as to BC’s standing at GT.

Is he influencing this? With what, money? Mentor to Stansbury?
