Whisenhunt and fan interest.

True, but Saban started his coaching career by spending 10 years as an assistant coach in then Division 1-A (Now, FBS) before his first stint in the NFL. Prior to taking the job at Alabama, Saban had 20 years of college coaching experience, half of it as a head coach, and 6 years in the NFL.

Whisenhunt, on the other hand, has just two years of coaching experience at the collegiate level (Vanderbilt) and that was in the mid-90's. He'd be coming to GT with just two years of college coaching experience that is of questionable relevance considering it occurred 20 years ago.
I will say again what I said in another post. Whoever gets the job will need to be an excellent recruiter, particularly in the metro area. I am not stuck on Whisenhunt, or anyone else in particular. But I don’t understand the disdain for him on here either.

Weren't you one of the posters who would constantly reference the revised recruiting rankings one of the sites would put out after they graduated? It was always an upward revision with Gailey and we had a couple Top 25 classes before even the 2007 class. I forget what site or when they stopped doing that (maybe they didn't and we just don't like what they say now).

My point: recruiting rankings have changed drastically in the last ten years. You almost never see a two star in our classes anymore. I'd argue that CPJ's 3* = CCG's 2*. Regardless, gailey did either a better job evaluating or developing players or both because we ended up with way more NFL talent under him.
I don't think that was me, but I know what you're talking about. Gailey did get a lot of 2* and 3* players that ended up being major contributors and even NFL players. But we weren't competing for recruits with the big boys. We were fighting for 3* players against the same teams we are now - we apparently just did a better job picking the right ones to fight for back then. My guess is we were not nearly as disadvantaged staff and scouting wise back then as teams like Duke surpassed us in recruiting staff.

Regardless, I'm not arguing that Johnson was better or even as good of a recruiter as Gailey. He wasn't. I'm just saying the difference was not significant, and a few anomalies like Calvin Johnson and the 2007 class don't change that.

I think there was some Gailey >Johnson talent. I don't have the stats to back it up but we had better players under Gailey than under CPJ - forget the stars. I am a huge CPJ fan so not running him down and wish he could have been the Coach with Gailey talent, particularly defensive talent. Some of the DL we had during Gailey were extremely talented and linebackers like Wheeler and Hall were very good as well.

So a guy who saw his replacement take the team to the Super Bowl doesn't like the coach who rightfully benched him? Good stuff.
Leinart sucked and was injury prone. Mariotta wasn't much better.

Heaven forbid we get a former pro coach with tons of connections who actually WANTS to be at GT and not just use us as some stepping stone to a bigger, better gig... the horror.

The sad truth is we are likely doomed for years unless we go to some equally lopsided option offense or land a miracle QB transfer. I'll be happy with pretty much any of the names mentioned, including Whiz (with maybe the exception of Monken simply because I'd like to see a little more passing in the offense and I don't think we'd see it with him).

(a) Why do you think Whiz wouldn't move back to the pros where he's been for decades if he had success?
(b) Why do you think 'tons of connections' to the San Diego Chargers organization is more valuable than tons of connections to metro Atlanta high school coaches (in the case of Tony Elliott, for example)?

I think AJ Jenkins or something like that. Went to Illinois. 1st round pick. IIRC
Pretty sure he just flipped after the coaching change don’t think it was academics. I think we lost one other during that time.

Funny that he was a 1st round pick, he has to be all time bust worthy for a 1st rnd WR. 17 catches, 200 yards in his career.

(a) Who knows but perhaps success at the college level makes him realize the NFL ain't for him? It's an unmeasurable unknown.

(b) The "tons of connections" to metro Atlanta high school coaches and the state of GA in general didn't seem to make a difference in recruiting for CPJ.

(a) “who knows?” is actually my point.

(b) CCG’s tons of connections to the NFL weren’t sufficient either

There’s an unusually high level of complete guessing going on these days!

Gailey definitely made mistakes or had a thing or two loaded against him
1) Flunkgate hurt pretty badly
2) Can we get a decent OC? Pat Nix? Remember how excited we were when we he was hired at Miami and we KNEW he would single handedly bring down their program? They are still shell shocked today.
3) OL recruiting just plain stunk. Our biggest complaint was having absolutely no depth on the OL
4) We needed a big time QB. Threet left. Ball tried, but was a square peg in a round hole. Bennett was just not that good. Garner was overhyped, weak arm- Urban dumped his commitment when he got hired at Florida and brought Tebow in. Renfree would have likely been next man up. We had Nesbitt, but I doubt his throwing mechanics would have made him much more accurate than ball in CCG's offense - although just his size and manhood may have made up for it.

The good under Gailey
1) Defense - DL, LB's, Safeties, Corners. Johnson, Walker, Wheeler, Burnett, Landry, Oliver, Guyton......hell, I could go on and on. A Phillip Wheeler type MLB probably would have won a game or two for us this season. Dude was like a damn bobcat. Hell, Landry layed the wood on McBrien and Suter so hard in the Maryland game that he put both of them out. That may have been one of the most impressive defensive games I have ever seen at BDS.
2) Tenuta - I know he had problems adjusting. I know we had some bad games, but when his defense was on it was stifling. We allowed 100 yards to NC State when they came in ranked 10th and undefeated.
3) Running backs - Choice, Dwyer, PJ Daniels (a walk on! amazing), Mike Cox, Luke Cox.
4) The Gold Standard. Remember, don't boo the opposing team. Cheer for your team instead! Don't boo the refs! Encourage them to do better!

He also was saddled with probation mainly for things, record keeping, etc. that happened prior to his arrival.
