I would be curious to know if other conferences aligned with ACC bowls lobby against playing GT. They would rather spend the extra practice time working on more traditional strategies, instead of preparing for the Tech offense, and their DCs know that CPJ can make them look bad if they don't execute a good scheme. Often they have to hire a consultant to prepare. They wouldn't lobby against Tech in that way, though. They would complain to the bowl reps about cut blocking supposedly causing injuries and portray it as dangerous and dirty. It's easier for the bowls to look for another team than to actually address the facts.

I bet Mississippi State would have rather played VT than us in the Orange that season

OTOH, LSU and Ole Miss kind of enjoyed it

I'm thinking T-stan gives it a week or so to let the Whiz talk die down, then announces The Whiz as the new head coach.

I have seen it suggested that we didn't want Birmingham because we have mens basketball vs uga at the exact same time.
That's a stupid reason to sacrifice this bowl game. We'd have put 15,000+ in Birmingham - easily. We will probably not put 1,500 in Detroit.

You are trying to make Tech look serious to an incoming head football coach, so you put an out of conference basketball game ahead of the outgoing coach's retirement game?

Yeah. I don't know if it was accurate or just someone's speculation. I agree with you, though.

No team is putting any big numbers in Detroit. If an incoming head football coach is too stupid to realize that perhaps he shouldn't be coaching GT.

We beat Kentucky in the TaxSlayer at the same time we beat Carolina in MBB.

My point is the message you are sending to the incoming football coach that you’ll ship the football team to Detroit for Christmas instead of trying to play close to home and have players and coaches home for Christmas for your outgoing coach. Especially if the reason is a non conference basketball game.

Well, no. You could tell 85 scholarship players that they don't get to go to a bowl game because, "reasons".
They used to let the players vote on acceptance. How do you think they would have voted here?

Are you seriously asking if I think the players would have voted to stay home instead of going to Detroit for a bowl game? Surely that isn't what you're saying?
You do realize that the players get bowl packages that are usually pretty nice? One of the few tangible benefits outside of the education for all that working out, sacrifice and suffering.

Is there a reason to rush the search at this point? Which teams are still looking for a HC and isn't Tech the best P5 opportunity remaining out there?

I suppose it would be nice to get a jump on recruiting ahead of the bowl game, but isn't Johnson employed until then?

Dec 19 early signing period seems to be everyone's concern... FWIW
