B1G Left Out Again. Best Two Teams in Championship Game?

Since the Big 12 only has 10 teams, there are no divisions and their conference championship features the two teams with the best records. If the situation were reversed, and Ohio State had stomped Michigan again while let's say Oklahoma played an 8-4 Iowa State from the hypothetical opposite division, it's likely Ohio State is in the playoff.

I get that Ohio State should've taken care of business against Purdue rather than getting curb-stomped so I'm certainly not feeling sorry for them, but it's reasonable for the Big 10 to explore options that maximize their chances of getting their top teams in the playoff.

What's funny though is that if they had kept the stupid Legends and Leaders divisions they started out with in 2011, they would've gotten the desired matchup this year that would've given Ohio State a better chance of getting in. What will also be funny is when they make the move to get rid of divisions and a 2-loss Ohio State beats a previously 1-loss Michigan in the Championship Game, both end up with 2 losses, and neither gets in.

Only 2 teams have ever won the National Championship in college football with 2 losses:

1960 Minnesota Gophers
2007 LSU Tigers (thanks SEC bias!)

I hope the Big Ten does this scheduling thing so they can grab 1/4 spots each year. Having Ohio State ranked one spot behind UGA was ridiculous, especially after blowing out Michigan.

Does UGA now have to lose THREE games each year to be shut out of the playoffs? It certainly looks that way.

Think about it. There were 3 undefeated teams ahead of Georgia and some people still wanted them in with two friggin’ losses. No 2 loss team should ever get a shot at winning the title. Ever.

College football is a total f-ing joke right now.

Plenty of people wanted a 2-loss champion Penn State in over a 1-loss Ohio State a couple years ago. FWIW, you were initially on board with Penn State but switched when you realized Penn State had beaten Ohio State at home rather than on the road.

Well yeah, but once you get the front-runner into the championship game you just officiate their way to victory. Did you even watch the Texas Oklahoma game?

My opinion: no team who gets their ass totally kicked during the regular season should ever get in the playoff (see UGA this year).

Let's stop pretending the voting has any metric other than the eyeball test. Until a team can win it all solely through on-field results, it's a sham

I have been calling for a divisionless conference for a long time. Tell everyone to schedule eight or even nine conference games. At the end of the season the two teams with the best records are invited to the championship game.

We are at a disadvantage in the Coastal having to play Clemson every season.

Yep. Do away with divisions. Play 12 conference games. Kick Georgia to the curb. No more patsies for anyone.
Well, I definitely hate losing to UGA all the time, but I'm not that excited by replacing them with Syracuse or Wake Forest.

Saw this discussion on Reddit. Since the B1G has been left out of the Playoffs two years in a row, it looks like they might be considering a model of top two teams in the league playing each other in the championship game rather than top team from each division. I think the sentiment is that OU got in over OSU because Texas was a better opponent than Northwestern.

It guarantees the best record matchup in the conference title game, but essentially makes divisions meaningless. For the ACC it would've been Clemson and Cuse I think.

Thoughts?

I wish we could have nice, tight 10 team conferences, 9 conference game round-robin season, pitting the top 2 for a championship every year.

Wouldn’t bother me one bit. We gain nothing by playing them. I wouldn’t mind replacing them with ND or FSU.

If we wanted to maintain a strong football/basketball balance, who would you kick out? Wake and BC would be the first to go. Then...two of VPI, NCSt, Miami,LVille?

I was wasting a bunch of time kicking this around in my head. Since you asked, my ideal ACC would be:

GT
UVA
NC
NCST
Duke
Wake
Clem
Mia
FSU
Maryland

Perhaps South Carolina could come back in, kicking Wake. It turns out you can make 7 pretty solid and traditional 10 team conferences. You would have to bring back a solid Big East, along with some new "Heartland" conference to absorb the teams that would get left out. Pipe dreams of engineers who prefer 90 degree angles and symmetry, I know.
