I find Richt's retirement very puzzling. As far as I could tell, he still had plenty of gas in the tank.
He's definitely pulling a Meyer. He started 3 years straight at Miami on fire but just like at ugag he can't follow through. He will be picked up somewhere and will continue to win. Given the right boosters he could pull down a NC. It seems though most p5 schools now reflect the need for instant gratification in relation to national relevancy, and I think too many put capable coaches in a bad position by expecting results too soon rather than letting them build the program a solid foundation.
These schools either blow their load too soon and burnout or it never amounts to anything competitive long-term because the house of cards crumble.
If you disagree, just look at the legacy of dynasty level coaches including saban. Like them or not, the schools and the fanbases usually didn't have high expectations of the coaching hires, and the dynasty programs were built slowly.
Even Tech almost lost the football program in 1980 before Dodd helped secure one hell of an AD, who took the job reluctantly still. 10 years later we got a Natty and are playing at the highest level for almost a decade.
