Talks a bit about:
  • How he needs to focus on recruiting and marketing so having his coordinators from Temple there already knowing what to do is going to be helpful.
  • Really wants to embrace the city of Atlanta.
  • GT is an Innovator and needs to look like Google or Apple (hasn't TStan said this?)
  • Everyone starting with a clean slate. Lots of RBs so need to implement a system to showcase them. Wants 5 TEs.
  • Continues to say there are no challenges only advantages.
  • Academics are a window into intangibles for recruits. Recruits that excel academically will probably excel in every way.
  • Coaching staff will be relentless recruiters with energy on the practice field. Everything in our power to help them earn their degree.
  • Went to waffle house every day his first 9 days. No carbs just a lot of protein.
  • Refuses to pick a winner between Clemson and Alabama
  • Staff meeting this week and Team Meeting Sunday night.

Thanks for the summary. Sounds good so far. I’m still skeptical he’ll be able to recruit the way he’s talking but he certainly gives the warm fuzzies when he does talk about it. Brings a lot of enthusiasm which is a refreshing change.

Indeed. Football recruiting has a lot of inertia - get one or two big gets and snowball it into an entire class. A good salesperson never hears the word no. I think some on our previous staff not only heard it but assumed it in certain cases. I think CGC will also forge a better relationship with the Hill than the previous administration had which could provide some benefits.

in the back of my mind, all I can think is Vandy and Duke have great academic reputations, one plays in the reputed best conference and the other has a head coach who coached putative HoF QBs ... and neither is exactly overrun with 4 and 5 stars. The previous offense may have been a limiting factor but I don't think was alone in that regard nor was it the largest.
I hope CGC proves otherwise. But I am skeptical.

You're not thinking #ATL

Both of those programs are most known for being perennial losers. This is actually a really good time for some of the "academic" schools (the two you mentioned, along with Stanford and Northwestern). Good coaching, which comes in different forms, goes a long way.

One big impediment that is gone is the idea that Tech can't compete in recruiting, so we'll take players most other Power Five teams don't want and put them in a special offense that will win seven or so games most years, in spite of not having a clue on defense. I'm not trying to criticize CPJ, who gave us some great wins and who I really liked. But, I'm happy to have a guy who thinks he can bring in big time recruits. This is his big chance, too. If he does succeed at Tech, every school in America will want him. So, if he's willing to bet his future on being able to recruit big and win big at Tech, I think we should be willing to bet our future on him, too.
