I have some more coaching news

Temple fans all seem glad that Patenaude is gone and most even saying he will be the weak link in the staff here.

Also, unrelated, but CGC is following Brent Key on twitter FWIW.
I’m thinking this is one of those situations where a school had trouble replacing a 4 year starter at QB so everybody blames the OC. They did much better down the stretch this year but I wasn’t really impressed with what their QB was able to do in the bowl game. Seemed very limited. We’ll see though.

Is "director of applied science" a normal position on a football staff, or is that part of the innovation branding that CGC is trying to get going?
Was wondering that myself. Horton was an assistant S&C at Temple.

In my opinion, this pretty much confirms that Key is coming on board. Wiesehan's last role at Temple was OL/Run Game Coordinator. I would think if Key weren't in the mix, Wiesehan would retain the same role here.

And it would make sense that the one major holdout right now is at the position in which the rumored target is with one of two teams still playing.

From the Article:

In his role, Horton will assist head football strength and conditioning coach Lewis Caralla in applying scientific and innovative methods to the Yellow Jackets’ strength-and-conditioning program. He spent the past two seasons at Temple as assistant strength and conditioning coach.

“Player development and player safety are the top two principles of our program and Ryan did a masterful job of implementing and monitoring those initiatives at Temple,” Collins said about Horton. “I’m excited for him to work with our student-athletes on The Flats.”

He’s going to be the guy playing with stuff like player gps units, HR monitors and such is my guess.

Announcing it during the national championship game would be awesome press.

Ok here's the summary so far, so we can make our best educated guesses at the vacancies (and for @BuzzLaw I'll post last 3 stops of each):

OC/QB - Dave Patenaude (Georgetown, Coastal Carolina, Temple)
DC/LB - Andrew Thacker (UCF, Kennesaw St., Temple)
RB - Tashard Choice (Indianapolis Colts [player], Dallas Cowboys [intern], North Texas)
WR - Kerry Dixon (FIU, Florida, Toledo)
S/co-DC - Nathan Burton (West Alabama, NC State, Temple)
CB/D-ST - Jeff Popovich (FIU, UTSA, Boise St.)

3 for offense and 3 defense, that leaves 4 openings. Most likely the following:

OL
DL
TE
LB

One of these will also likely hold offensive special teams responsibilities and one will also be the recruiting coordinator.
My guess is this:

OL - Brent Key (with co-OC/assistant HC title) - I imagine Key would be recruiting coordinator also.

DL - Jim Panagos (Temple DL coach - his name has been removed from Temple staff page) (also rumors of Lance Thompson from USCe filling this position)

TE - Chris Wiesehan maybe? (Temple OL coach, name also removed from Temple staff page) could help Key with the OL coaching and focus on TE's.

LB - Larry Knight (Temple OLB coach, name also removed from Temple staff page) Augusta native.

Any better guesses?
GoGATech should get StinGTalker of the offseason. I really appreciate it! Been slammed and have had a difficult time keeping up with everything.

They're probably waiting until after the NCG to announce the move.

Patenaude is no Lincoln Riley or anything, but I'm optimistic about this hire. From all I've read Temple did not have a very good QB. When he was at Coastal Carolina his teams put up very good offensive numbers, and had a bunch of guys nominated for the Walter Payton award (FCS heisman basically).

I work in the athletic department at an FCS school where Patenaude spent a few years as OC. I just talked to our HC (who was the DC during Patenaude's tenure) to get his take and he has full confidence Patenaude can transition the GT offense quickly and successfully. A lot of his scheme is zone read/RPO with principles that are similar to the 3O. Our HC said it's just a matter of finding the right QB. He also said that if you ever have a chance to talk to Patenaude at any GT events, you should definitely do it. Apparently he's an interesting character.

I'm really pleased with the staff that Geoff has built. Short of getting Giff Smith back, it's a heavy hitter recruiting rotation, and seems to be strong on coaching too.

Happy with Patenaude as well. Realistically any name OC would probably shy away from the rebuild/rework job that we have here. Patenaude looks great for the job IMO.

When I read this earlier, I got curious about the Coastal Carolina coach based on his comments. He has a pretty wild career trajectory. He stepped away from football for a quarter-century and was CEO of TD Ameritrade before returning and eventually leading Coastal Carolina from FCS to FBS.
