Comparing quarterbacks

Something was broken in CPJ's offense the past couple of years. No matter which QB was in there, all they did was run QB keeper literally 90% of the time. Mysteriously, some teams could not stop this single play concept. The teams that did stop it, though, made the TO look inept as nothing else was open. Even when TQM decided to pitch it, it looked like he waited too long vs. a quick pitch appeared the better option.

It wasn’t just the past couple of years.

I don't understand the narraitve that JT was a bad passer. He was pretty good honestly, WAY better passer than Marshall for sure. That TD number didn't surprise me, JT was legit. Best passer since Goose imo. Notice I said passer, not thrower(Vad).

JT would only be considered a “good” passer when compared to other Tech QB’s under Johnson. Hell, he was worse than Reggie Ball.

Agree that the offense seemed limited the past few seasons. I loved shifting Orwin Smith to a more traditional wishbone position and then running him on a counter. The wheel route pass vanished. Quick out routes were infrequent. It was as if we only had part of the offense implemented.
there were a couple of times this year we tried running the wheel route to the B back but it was covered.

His back shoulder throws to Smelter got us crap tons of critical first down conversions.

39 PASSING TOUCHDOWNS YALL.

Justin Thomas was an excellent passer. His arm was good. His size discouraged recruiters from offering him as a QB. I never thought his first steps out from under center nor his ball handling skills were excellent for a QB in our system. But, I had no concerns about his passing or his running skills.

He wasn't that accurate a thrower, as evidenced by his career completion % being less than 50%. But he had great WRs in 2014 and absolutely had a knack for making big plays and throws at critical times.

Most of all, he was a real on-field team leader, something that's been missing since his departure.

JT's passer rating or lack thereof is a product of the 3O since most of his passes were 20 yards downfield. It has no bearing on how good of a passer he was when the D is expecting a pass. I think JT would have thrived in OU's offense this year. Murray reminds me a lot of what JT could have been in a different scheme.

His career completion % also took a big hit from the 2015 season in which we were down in almost every game and ended up in obvious passing situations that our o-line rarely gave us a serious chance with. Also, as mentioned, we were usually throwing 20+ yards downfield.

I love JT, but he wasn’t a good passing QB. His arm was average and his technique was awful. He needed a big windup to get the ball downfield, which slowed his throw and gave defenses more time. There was an obvious attempt to correct this between 2014 and 2015. All it did was rob JT of ball velocity on his throws. They should have left him alone like Meyer did with Tebow. Just let the guy have his wonky mechanics and be comfortable.

JT was a great option qb with incredible speed. He was only a real passing threat with 2 NFL level WR’s.

Reggie was absolutely a better passer.

And Reggie still loves GT so I wish everyone would get off his back already. TQM will probably be posting mutt stuff a decade from now.

Wrong. Not even the statistics back this up. Except for the disastrous 2015 season, JT was always above 50%. He had a 3:1 TD-INT ratio in 2014, and 4:1 in 2016. He was absolutely a better passer than Ball--more accurate and made better decisions.

Go watch Calvin highlights from 2006. Reggie had better mechanics, a stronger arm, and was more accurate.

I watched every game, not just a highlight reel that cherry-picks the positive moments. Reggie completed 44% of his passes that year. He threw nearly as many interceptions as touchdowns for his career. Reggie's career completion % was 48.6 and JT's was 48.7%, despite JT averaging 8.9 YPA (Reggie was at 6.0 YPA). There's no basis for Reggie being a better QB than JT.

JT's senior completion % was 9% better than Reggie's. Reggie had Calvin Johnson. JT had Ricky Jeune.

Maybe one day TQM, too can find his mutt to punch at BDS.
