Starting to watch recruiting a little more. I've never understood how some of these kids make decisions (yes I know they are kids, but..) Brendan Douglas going to UGA when they were stacked with NFL talent, Fields going to uGag and now OSU.

Anyway.....Recruiting "battle" for a 3 star with bama, ugag and others. All the other teams have at least 5 TE's and we have 1 with 1 commit. If we can sell "heated toilets to a truck stop", this should be easy.....we'll see.

Well, "kids" don't have the same decision making process as, say, seasoned engineers. But the easy answer is most of these youngsters want to be on a winning team. They don't consider that their talents may not be comparable to the players that they will be competing with for playing time. They have been the best player on every team they have played on since middle school, and they have a legion of friends and family constantly whispering to them that they are the greatest. For you and me, Seither's choice seems obvious, but he will have to be sold for sure.

Rating services are not the ultimate arbiter of how good a kid is. All a star rating is is an outsiders estimate of his ability.

The school evalutes everyone themselves. If a kid is good enough to help a team, that school recruits him. If multiple schools make the same decision and thinks it is worth their time to try, you have a recruiting battle.

"Stars" tell you something about a group of kids but not as much as you think about an individual.

Brandon Miller went to UGAg because of their computer science department or some such bullshit.

Kid is insanely athletic for his size and underrated IMO. He'd be a great addition at a position we are starting from scratch on. But he isn't the only important recruiting battle going on right now. CGC just flew to Germany to hopefully keep Penn St from stealing our official visit with the DT Darkwa the way Michigan stole Welschof from us last year. He also has fought off competition to get an official visit from the LB from Florida, Brothers. We've got another DL coming in this weekend that just got the Rivals bump to high 3*, and offers out on a couple of more LBs. And let's not forget the 4 star RB still out there, Jamious Griffin.

Whether or not we keep Seither away from the shiny objects of UGAg, Bama and Penn St, I think we're going to add some nice additions to finish out 2019, and get a great start on 2020 soon.

One thing to learn about recruiting now vs. before is how the early signing period is a GameChanger for kids like Seither. He was a solid 3-star recruit so for a school with a TE need like GT he was someone we really wanted. Other elite schools like UGA and Bama did not think they needed a TE a month ago. Then the transfers and draft entries happen and Seither is one of if not the best TE left out there. All of a sudden, everyone wants the best remaining TE.

This likely would have happened with our signeee from NJ if CGC did not get him to sign in December.

A Bama 5-star recruit tweeted a picture of his new $70K truck immediately after signing day. Other recruits have tweeted pictures of stacks of $100 bills on signing day under the caption "struggle over wit (sic)!" I think you can figure out the biggest reason $$$ why a 5-star would go to place overflowing with 5-star competition.

That was a UGA recruit.

The kid you're referring to is Nolan Smith and he's going to UGA but his parents are rich already. They paid his IMG tuition out of pocket. So while this does happen, it didn't happen in your first example.

There was a lot of confusion about his rich parents. Most people thought Nolan Smith was the son of Derek Smith, the ex-NBA player (9 years). Nope, that is a different Nolan Smith who is now an assistant bbal coach at Duke? Of course this doesnt mean his parents still can't be wealthy. However, tweeting a picture of a $70K truck on *signing day* is rather suspicious. Just because he has wealthy parents doesnt mean that truck was paid for by his parents either. Just sayin.

I believe one or both of his parents are doctors or surgeons. Regardless his parents bought the truck and have plenty of money.

When I looked at IMG's baseball program for my grandson a couple years ago, tuition, room and board was $70k+. Higher now. Didn't check on football then, but it's similar to baseball now...around $78k/ year for high school age.

His big time offers came after he was rated by the services. Thankfully teams don't simply use what services say and keep evaluating players over time. He was either underrated or developed into a much better prospect or both.

It's a huge game changer. Especially with our coaches that can close.

As for why recruits choose, there are all sorts of motivations and factors involved more than just "I want to play on a winning team." Sometimes there are combos of things. I wanted biGTime football and top rated school. The other stuff was just icing on the cake- relatively close to home, living in a US major city, warm, etc. Someone conveniently forgot to mention the ratio though...

GT is an easy sell to recruits and parents IMO. Our list of what we can offer is very high, but I think we offer something better than just about everyone else. "How much money will your son have in 5 years time, 10 years time, 20 years time? Will he have the tools and the time/money be able to take care of you as you get older?"

No parent of a recruit wants their kid to be poor and jobless coming out of college. GT can keep that from happening via football OR school and will facilitate your dreams in whichever direction you want. There's a bunch of other recruiting factors that we all argue about during the offseason. IMO there are very few negatives; "The Hill" issue is overblown. There are 4*s and 5*s that want good academics as well and if you work hard enough, you can get out.

Awesome post, and a breath of fresh air - somebody on a Tech board selling our positives instead of doing our competitors' negative recruiting for them. Thanks.

You weren't one of the recruits we'd take out to "our eastern campuses," also known as Agnes Scott & Emory, making sure to avoid any telltale signage, were you?:inout:

Jacob Eason stayed commited to uga after Richt left because he was “in love with” the recruiting coordinator from his official visit. Kids make decisions for all sorts of illogical reasons.
