Note to self - don't book a Marriott

As I guy who works at a hotel, this really could completely ruin your entire yearly financials. 60% of our profit is spread across 6 home football games, so you could lose 10% off your yearly profits in potentially one day.

That being said, no excuses. This is nothing more than a stress dream for the people who run my hotel, they would never in a million years leave a football date unprotected.

Atlanta has hotels everywhere all over the city within easy reach of BDS. Clemson is a ööööing cow town. Stop playing in ööööhole cow towns

If they overbooked by 100 rooms, how could they honor reservations? Stupid mistake, yes. Someone trying to pull the rug out...highly unlikely IMO. Sounds like a computer glitch that didn’t prevent people from over booking like it should have

Then, you would naturally honor the bookings that happened first, which they didn't...according to this dude.

I suggest reading the article. They explain what was most likely done.

?

The place is still going to be packed, right?

Says they overbooked, not that they now have empty rooms.

Worked my way through GT , first with Marriott, then with Hyatt. Spent most of my adult career in the hotel and resort industry. You just don't make this kind of mistake, on this order of magnitude, ever!! Franchisee of this hotel is grossly incompetent to have this occur, and should lose his franchise for a starter.

My prediction is for really ugly lawsuit for breach of contract, since a hotel reservation , guaranteed with a credit card or an advance deposit, is a promise to deliver a clean, comfortable room, at an agreed upon rate, for an agreed period of occupancy.

When expecting $700 for a room and you only get 69.99, times every room in the hotel. You basically made no money. Especially after clean up, breakfast, etc.. There is a reason hotels are expensive on packed nights. That's a lot of people in one building to clean up after.

Gross, gross, gross incompetence.

What the article says about them waiting 9 months, letting it fill up for the high price, and cancelling the cheaper ones, is probably exactly what they did.

I think the fact it took 9 months to recognize the problem is pretty indicative of the issue.

I work in this industry and I'm pretty confident the issue was the hotel didn't update their blackout dates. Thus, the default pricing applied. When there are big events like this that create situations where hotels want to change the default pricing algorithm, they have to make sure they do this. It seems pretty clear they didn't.

The other scenario is that they did and there was a system issue with Marriott. However, if that were the case, I would think corporate would likely advise the hotel to honor the rates and then pay the hotel franchise owner the difference in lost revenue. Writing a $50k check is better than something possibly going viral and creating image issues.

Small hotels like this typically have VERY high turnover rates and counting on the hotel employees to know how to perform even basic functions is a struggle. It turns out paying the dude at the front desk $10 an hour doesn't lead to loyal, responsible and capable employees.

That's a little disturbing. Basically challenging the group of people to take them to litigation... but by that time, the game is past and whats the point?

Understand. Am just saying they will probably still have the rooms sold, or sold out, at the prices of those overbooked.

Would be shocking if the cost of doing business was not considered to start with.

Whatever, just the one writers opinion and I have no skin in the situation.

fwiw, this hotel is operated by Midas Hospitality and most likely the pricing and the cancellations have little or nothing to do with Marriott Corporate.

It will be interesting to see what kind of pressure Marriott Corp puts on the operator. Marriott tends to be very by-the-book.

If Marriott is on the sign, it has everything to do with Marriott
