SMH at ESPN

Regardless. Despite lazy revisionism the INS poll in 1952 was every bit as much of a major poll in real time, not some lame retroactive formula, as UP and AP. It's just a matter of simplification to say it wasn't since it was only a few years later that INS merged with UP to create UPI.

ESPN rankings are garbage. VPI is only a few spots below us. :rotfl:

Wonder why Mich. St. didn't even play a bowl game in 1952? Did they decline out of fear of losing the natty? Yeah, things were weird back then.
The B1g 9 conference at the time prohibited bowl participation by member schools. That rule was short lived.

But they beat The Ohio State and Meatchicken so they were obviously national champions according to NY and Chicago sportswriters whose final poll was released before Bowl games were played.

Thank you for the correction. I was 50/50 on if it was Michigan state or Michigan but I def thought it was 53.

I’ve had a uGa fan once say to me that we had 2.5 national championships because they didn’t count 52 and because of the 1990 split. He had been to almost every dwag game in the last 12 years. Which means he saw 2nd and 26 in person.
Which also means, like so many dwag fans, he’s never seen them win a natty
19-80! Clap! Clap! Clap clap clap!

Michigan State was an Independent in 1952 and they didn’t play Ohio State but beat Michigan and an average Notre Dame team. They didn’t join the Big 10 until 1953 the next season.

I thought that it was their not-entirely-a-member" status that kept them out of a bowl, but wikipedia said MI State was a member since 1950.

Whatever, what can you expect from a conference that hasn't had the right number in their name since 1995?

The polls were heavily slanted back in the day. ND could finish in the top 20 with a so so record.

any list that puts stupid ga. southern in its top 100, much less top 50, isn't a credible list.
Southern was playing high school ball not long ago. who gives AF what they did when they played an FCS schedule?
