A few major tasks to improve our offense

We are currently patchworking our offense together. The key to it having regular success is a few simple things

1. You got good running backs and got to have a good balance of short passes and carries
2. You got to get something out of you oline in passing block and do things that help alleviate some of shortcoming in your pass blocking and limit holding calls so short passes, solid running, and then some play action shots mixed in to keep people honest
3. You got to go with QB that is decisive even if it means throwing it away a QB that holds on to the ball will just put us in holes which this offense cant recover from right now.

So long story short we still need more run/pass balance we need to let are RB put us in those 3rd and 3 situations to convert and Graham for most part seemed comfortable and looked the part so got to roll with whoever shakes out LJ didnt get much of a look, Oliver maybe was in by design but to me just was reacting timidly at times that 4th down endzone play for example bonehead flip when if he just tucked it had much better shot at getting in endzone. The oline wont have to face the likes of Clemson dline going forward it should help them at least in pass blocking some to be against closer talent gap as well.

Better pass blocking would be nice, but does it really matter if the OL gives an extra second if the QB is a poor passer to begin with? A QB that can hit timing routes and simple screen plays is probably the most dramatic way we can see improvements and involves the fewest changes in parts

Clemson’s D is gonna make a lot teams re-think their offense. Doesn’t mean they should, though. I haven’t seen nearly enough to have an opinion on the offense or personnel (well, Toby looked pretty bad throwing the ball...). I see USF as the first game, for the most part.

Does it take 9 months to learn to throw to the TE and to throw quick timing routes to slot WRs

All over CFB there were TFr & first time starters that did that with ease, the new rules make it almost impossible to NOT be efficient at passing

I would have liked to have seen the older Griffin come in at FB and us go under center near the goal line. I have always hated shotgun from the 2. Hell, I would have been happier with 4 straight under center QB sneaks

So... You need a good o-line, good skill position players, a good quarterback to distribute the ball, and good play calling? Simple.

Our Oline is not going to probably be consider good this season but you need to them to just not make penalties then run a offense around them that doesn't ask them to hold a pocket forever and you don't need a QB that wants to hold the ball and not make decisive decisions in pocket and ready to get ball out if your timid and try to stretch plays out or break down to just run for it your going to be taking alot of negative plays

I honestly think we have good skill position players

You can make your OLine & QB look slightly better with smart play calling

I said slightly

Our tackles did a good job pass blocking. Honestly, considering the competition, the guards were OK. The center needs work when shaded, which isn’t surprising considering our old offense had him shedding the block and getting upfield.

This. I am going to think the offense we saw against Clemson was specific for Clemson and not what we will see the rest of the season.

I hope this isn't true

I hope we have that big boy mentality that we're gone run what we run best come hell or high water regardless of who is on the other sideline

Not so simple when half your O roster are a, b and QBs.

Could have used more Ol all this time.

Yeah, that's dumb. The whole point of scouting is so that you can adjust your game plan based on your opponent's strengths and weaknesses. Given our personnel, Clemson's absurdly talented pass rush, and our lack of experience passing, I think the overall game plan made sense. I would have liked to see us try to get to the perimeter more, but I get that we didn't try to go downfield because that probably would not have gone well for us.

This is my understanding. I would add we aren’t ready to drop back in 5/7 step drops consistently.

As for playcalling, we really need to be ahead on downs if we are looking to win. One of the main battles we need to win to win the game.
