Patenaude

They were all recruited to play option ball. I don’t blame any of them for not being a fit for this offense. They just aren’t the right pieces.
But every one of them ran shotgun spread in HS
This offense is what they ran in HS
Even Patnaude said so

We ran a set with Oliver that is a perfect fit for the personnel we have. And we scored a TD. Then we never ran it again.

On a key drive at the end of the game he brings Oliver back and then has him keep it every time with no complexities at all.

Fortunately we got a big break with the targeting penalty.

I said it last week and I’ll say it again, this guy is in way over his head.

We scored 38 points on this team last year. With the way the defense performed today we should’ve had at least that many today.

Save the excuses about personnel. That’s total BS. I don’t think anyone expects a high powered offense but it is not unreasonable to expect the offense to step on the field ready to play.

Maybe trotting 3 QBs out on the field is detrimental to the growing process for the offense as a whole?

This is the most intelligent statement in this thread. The only explanation I can think of is that they're still trying to figure out who gives us the best shot in the game, and different QBs have shown flashes of being that guy at different times.

We won this one, so no lasting harm was done today. I'm even ok with continuing the evaluation over the next couple games, but we'd better have a clear starter by the time we get back into ACC play.

I think it's difficult to evaluate the OC, QB's, and outside skill players right now because it's clear the O-line can't hold up in pass blocking yet. That's why everything was so limited to short passes and the screen game all day. You're taking your life in your hands right now if you call an intermediate or a long pass play. The O-line and QB's looked legit terrified anytime USF walked up and showed blitz pre-snap. We just have to trust Brent Key is going to continue developing these guys and they improve week to week and are a much better group by the team we hit the meat of the ACC schedule in a month.

None of this is unusual, really. Folks maybe forget what an ugly thing the 3O was in Paul Johnson's first year before it finally started to click late in the season. Poor Dwyer got his ass kicked on B-back dives all that season, as I recall. Offense takes longer to adapt than defense. It's not shocking.

Could not have said it better myself.

I’m not impressed with Paterdude. For all of the “NFL” style offense comments, we run Oliver out there and just have him run it every ööööing play.

If this is a rebuilding year, quit with the “gives us the best chance at winning” bullshit. Run the offense you ultimately want to get the reps. Wasting time with Oliver at this point is just dumb.

Can we talk about that play that we have run twice so far(once today, once last week, neither time it worked), where we line up 5 guys on the left side of the field bunched together and run a sweep to the other side of the field with absolutely no blockers? There's like 3-4 OL, and the play has been a disaster both times.

Another one is running it over and over to the short side of the field. Seemed like we did that a ton today. Also shotgun on 3rd and short, which seems as if it always gets stuffed.

That play sucks

They had the numbers advantage on the left side of the field but instead ran a sweep to the right where they had more guys. Hard to tell if it's a call at the line or a predetermined guess that wound up wrong. Either way it was no bueno

I think it is hard to tell with Patenaude at this point given where the team is right now, but the point on weird play calls and game management stand. We will have to see where he is at the end of the year when he has a full body of work.

We scored 38 points last year but we still lost. I'm still not sold on Patenaude yet but I think the personnel excuses are valid AF. Our offensive line already was undersized and inexperienced in this offense, then we lost 2 of them today and had to play backups.

They were sending 5 and 6 people most of the day and the OL was struggling to pick them up. Not sure many offenses are going to excel when that happens. We really really need to get bigger and stronger on both lines of scrimmage.

I definitely hear ya on the injuries and I’ll never criticize a student athlete anyway. But unless these guys were injured on the first play, I still see some significant issues with game readiness.

I certainly hope it gets better.

This thing is ugly. All I can figure is that he's showing it, so we can do something like put a qb out on the edge, and do a double pass or something.

There must be some master plan with it. At least I hope so.

Do you have a clue the we lost to this team last year, but won today? We are very thin on offensive talent (WRs, OLs, QBs) because nobody wanted to play in the 3O. We will be much better when CGC gets some players in here.

I’m just tired of them saying this is a “Pro style” offense. I know they have an uphill battle, but geez don’t tell me this offense is pro style
