Defense!

First time in YEARS that I have not cringed when the D came in. Great D today.

By the fourth quarter I was happy to see Harvin or the Defense, but winced every time the offense came out.

Total 180 from the last 11 years and it's only been two games...

Think usf 3rd doen conversion was appx 27% - excellent D.

Believe 4 sacks?

Harvin - Holy Crud! Best game by a punter i have ever seen.
Agreed, Harvin was great. Actually, the USF punter was also freaking incredible. This game was the Battle of the Punters, and both of them were amazing.

4/6 of Harvin's punts were inside the 20, and zero touchbacks. USF's punter (Trent Schneider) had only 1 touchback (on 7 punts) and *averaged* 51.6 yds per punt. Those are great numbers from both guys.

Harvin had two really nice pooch kicks that didn’t have to go that far. And he shanked a 3rd pooch.

USF’s kicker outkicked his coverage a couple of times because of poor hang time. But he did totally crush a couple as well.

Harvin kicks with a different spin on his punting situations... Long boomers with hang time fly like passes... shorter pooches tumble end over end in flight, ergo the USF returner fumbling twice. Then there is the inside the 15 punts that land with an away from the goal line bounce. He's fun to watch, as much as I don't like to see him on the field (he saved GT's ass today).
We'll see him on Sundays.

The height, direction, and the tumble of those punts led to the muffs. Perfect punts

Only play that made me cringe was the early 3rd Down in our end where Curry was covering the WR drag and looked like he was running in sand. Other than that not much to complain about.

T Swilling is a beast. Carpenter was all over the field. Secondary already looks really, really good. We might end up with 2 or 3 on all conference teams. That’s two solid pass defense games already.

Decent QB pressure although I’m cautious to get too excited about that until I see it sustained against some better competition.

Overall very pleased.

I think there were really only 3 significant breakdowns on defense all day.
1) the long QB run in the 3rd. There was a hold that assisted the play. I think we stop the play without the hold
2) the slant for the TD. Appeared to be no inside coverage or anything. Just blank field between the QB and WR.
3) the long pass to the one yard line. Incredible effort to run him down. The 5 yard penalty helped. We made a good play stopping them again. A great play getting the fumble.

Overall, I give the defense an A-. If it weren't for those 3 plays, it is damn near a perfect game. I know it is considered a lesser opponent, but their QB did start at Alabama before Hurts took over.

Our DB's are studs. Carpenter looks like he is in command out there

Wisconsin held them to 0 points and scored 49.

I know the commutative property of football isn't a sure thing, but get real. A W is a W, but this W probably means we only win 3 this year. The only box score difference was penalties, really.

We had 3 defensive breakdowns during the game. We were every bit as good as Wisconsin shutting them down otherwise. The TD should have never happened. Our defense is not a problem at the moment.

If we're playing ifs and butts, then take away their first TD and then give them the 2nd one they fumbled away magically at the one inch line, and the game is the same. It was an evenly matched game overall, and their offense is absolutely terrible. They gave us 6 first downs by penalty, and we averaged less than 4 yds per pass and 4 yds per rush. The game was an offensive cripplefight. We only won it because they literally did everything they could to give it to us.

The Secondary looks really good building the whole DB-U talk that has followed Collins and he himself has pitched. Swilling looks like a legit NFL prospect early on this season, Tariq Carpenter had a great bounce back game making plays and not missing on really any tackling, K.Oliver also looks really solid in the Nickel, plus Sims got some PT as well. The Linebackers I saw some actually athletic ability in that group and moving around Q.Jackson, Knight, and C.Thomas all looked good moving around and making plays sadly Curry is just slow out there. The D-line for what it's worth while not overall talented the are 100% effort and worked hard ever down and Collins Rotation with them and off-season workouts showed as they looked fresh all game.

You're a miserable old öööö, aren't you?

Actually, I apologise. I take that back.

Our offense needs correction, but we are much more talented than them at skill positions. Their OL was huge. If we get an OL looking like that, we will terrorize the ACC

@beej67 has a fair point, but it's also fair to point out we're in game 2 under a new coach and there are only 2 more Div 1 teams with fewer seniors than us. We should improve game by game more than most, and the D is ahead of where we thought they'd be by now.

I mean really... raise your hand if you thought the interior DL was about to win us a game.

This is the most important thing to point out. No team in that situation does well. We are going to do terribly. All I'm trying to say is everybody here needs to heavily invest in butthurt futures or they're going to have an emotional breakdown when we go 0-fer in the ACC.

Mind not rite.

Yeah, that was a blatant hold that is typically called. I also thought both LBs made C efforts to make the tackle. In other words, they didn't sell out to make the tackle and it allowed him to get up field; not sure why they didn't attack with relentless effort ;-)
