Positives and Comments

Good points but I think at some point our QB's need to be given an opportunity to take a shot downfield. The fact that we appear to be one dimensional on offense doesn't help our offense IMO. At least present the opposing D an illusion of throwing the deep ball to keep them honest.
Sounds like what we have heard for the last 11 years.

I agree that what we’ve seen on the defensive side is impressive. Obviously, depth on the DL needs to be addressed and we need some serious LB’s. I’m hoping recruiting will take care of those two issues. I’m so tired of either being “undersized” or “a step slow”. Collins is getting paid so we never have to say those two things again. I have faith.

Another positive. Even the coverage failure on the long pass, (Carpenter?) ran the receiver down and tackled at the 1, leading to the goal line stand.
I credit our defensive staff AND our strength and conditioning staff for the receiver getting caught and for us making a stand leading to the "Jasper Sanks rides again" fumble.
If we were a half step slower over a 40 yards, it is a USF score. If we didn't have the off season strength and conditioning gains at the goal line, they punch it in. This S&C staff will create magnificent improvements over the next several years.
I know we are only in game 2 of this season, and I expect there will be struggles, but years 2, 3 and onward we are going to see a stifling defense. We get some big bodies on the DL. Knight played great for a freshman. He will be another Phillip Wheeler or better.

Great points!

The refs got their one "blindside block" call in. Apparently, it is a point of emphasis this season

I don't know a lot about it, but think maybe Mason is running where he needs to run, not sure we gain anything with trying him in "space". Think maybe J. griffin could be effective in both places, when he's ready, just still a little early for him it seems. Did he play at all Sat?

He's definitely a deadly north-south runner, but I thought I saw a few plays where he looked like he could do more than that. I don't think I ever saw him go down from the first defender.

Still pissed about the hold on the long QB run USF had out of the shadow of the North end zone. He would have been tackled easily for a slight loss or no gain had it not been for USF'S left tackle grabbing and holding our DL on the play.

Major momentum shift in the game and a really, really bad no call. As in NFL ref getting reassigned no call as opposed to the yokels allowed to ref college games with no consequences to piss poor/incompetent/on the take officiating. Felt like GT gets the stop there with a short field and perhaps, USF folds up shop for the rest of the day. I'm guessing that holding simply isn't called anymore regardless of how egregious.

As you said earlier, the hustle to make the tackle at the goal line was a major effort that proved to be decisive.

Through 2 games, the tackling has been the best in quite a long time.

Yeah, head in front doesn't matter anymore. More or less, you have to make sure the guy can see you; not sure how you can know for sure where his eyes are. I think practically it means don't knock them off their feet; get in the way but don't do it aggressively.

Also, seems to me it could lead to flopping: if you ever don't see the hit make sure you fall down and roll over and act ded.

It looks like they don’t want you blocking back opposite the play. You’re correct in you’re thinking about the aggressiveness of it. He would have been fine to just hold him up

Clayton will help the D line next year. He should be playing now but the NCAA is corrupt.
I wish we could have seen this defense with Brandon Adams and Clayton on the line this year.
