I was in the stands early to watch warmups. Wells did not kick like he did last year before the game, and it really wasn't close. Don't know why but he didn't look like he had much power. Just before the team leaves for the locker room before the game, team lined up three times for about a 40 yard try with live snap and linemen there. Wells missed badly, then King missed just wide, then King made one.
Based on what I saw pregame, King had to kick.

The Citadel kicker at the half warmups missed just wide from 59, made from 59 and made from 61. That isn't a misprint, he kicked it from his own side of the 50. He could hit from 65 at least. Their coach blew it when he could have gone up 2 scores with less than 10 min and they were at the 25 or so. He should have run it up the middle and kicked. Instead thrown for a loss and put it on the hash - missed wide from long range. To his credit, he didn't make that mistake again in the last 2 minutes or OT.
Useful poop. Thanks.

The Wells XP was blocked from what I heard on radio afterward, but I couldn’t tell from my seat if that was the case.

Do we know if the block was because the kick was low or was it an execution breakdown?

This. And I watched Wells miss 4 consecutive after half as well. The first one he doinked off the right goal post from 30 yards....yes, that's right...with the ball spotted on the 23 yard line.

All of you bitching about the kicker were either: a ) not at the game b) not watching the kickers if you were

I just rewatched it and the only block I see is where Wells blocked it off the side of his foot wide right. It got up quickly and does not appear to have been touched.

I couldn’t bear the thought of rewatching, LOL. You are a brave man!

Ain't gonna lie...I fast forwarded to that point and watched the kick. Couldn't watch the rest.

It sucks. The kickoffs are short. The field goals are all over the place. PAT misses.....lol.

At least we punt well.

Maybe he was aiming for the post.

We have a kicker coming in next year. I’ll assume things will continue to suck until then.

How do our kickers get worse after they arrive on campus? This is one position where we should excel. Do we have a kicking coach?

Several posters have tried to argue that Wells looked so bad before the game it's no wonder King was kicking. But in fact Wells started, and was pulled after the missed XP. So it's not like King won the job in practice during the week or pre-game.

The essential point, IMHO, is that you shouldn't pull a guy for missing an XP. When a guy has a fumble do you give him the ball again? If you think he's your best option, you want to build up his confidence. Especially at that position.
