He saw the schedule for this and next year, looked at his recruits, and did the calculus. He wanted to leave still ranked above Gailey on the win percentage scale. That wasn’t happening if he stuck around any longer. So he bailed.
I would bet that's not the only reason, but that that might have had a small bit to do with it, personally.

Look in our budget and find a $2 million payout. It isn't there and our budget isn't so big that they could easily hide that.
What I heard was negotiated down and spread payments, but I'm getting info filtered from folks second hand.

PJ had a 1 million dollar retirement clause in his contract. We discussed it a lot. Seems like it was put in there in case there was a mutual desire to part ways.

Fwiw, I think he still had the option of coming back for another year, but had no desire to live the hotseat life at his age (and make no mistake, he put himself on the hotseat with the past 4 year's record) and the x's and o's were no longer fun with the talent disparities he was facing. So I basically think it was somewhat mutual.

Why we talking about this again?

I think cpj retired. Dont think we "ran him off."

Although after ut game and his later contact with ut we probably should have.

He didnt know? Horse manure, but if on the slight possibility it is true then he should have fired his agent.

For those too young to know, this has so many similarities to 1980 it is scary.

Thank heavens this time we didnt bring in a new HC for all the wrong reasons.

If we played Minnesota during the regular season last year I think we would’ve won. The circumstances of the game were a perfect storm for malaise.

The "circumstances"?

The players way to honor cpj?

Usually players are fired up toi send a coach out a winner.

From what I was told, Paul’s decision to step down was entirely his own
There were going to be conversations about the program and its future - but Paul turned his notice before those could take place
Would Paul still have a job after those talks isn’t clear

Really disappointing bowl game. New coach already hired who said they change the system so players feel like what’s the point of practicing. Transfers looking to get out. I would say SOMETIMES players rally to send coach off as a winner. Maybe in a more desirable bowl the team would have. You know this but you choose to be obtuse.

This is gonna be a ööööshow of a season on this board. I don't know if this is the worst or best possible time for a bye...

I think losing to an FCS triple option team followed by the ööööty team he bailed on to come to GT would be nightmare worst-case scenario for Geoff Collins. I don't expect a lot more wins this season, but we really really REALLY need to win this one.
I'm not sure we can do it, either. Objectively, it's a tough game for most schools. It's a tall ask for whatever you want to call Tech at the moment.

good idea - we were selling out the place and excitement was at all-time highs during the awesome 2017-18 seasons! Bring back the buzz! Bring back the 25-QB-Keeper-Offense! Bring back 6-7 wins and bowl losses!!! Let's continue getting mud-stomped by that football factory, Duke!
Preach it brother! No excitment at all in GT football with PJ's QB keeper offense. Seriously, just was not any fun at all walking into BDS in those years!

I would say losing to a 27 point underdog was way less fun than destroying Kansas, Syracuse, etc. with the 3O.

I think it's time for us to stop comparing where we are with where we were, because it's so totally irrelevant. The interesting questions at this point are what can CGC do to get this team to 'rally' and win some games this season.

He needs to head up to Boggs and find some smoke-making chems and then head over to the Optics lab in Howey and get a ööööton of mirrors.

mix that öööö up - success!

Yes, Davis did not impress. Maybe doesn't have 'soft' hands, maybe wasn't using his body well, maybe wasn't running the routes well – but either well he was much bigger than his coverage but couldn't bring the ball in. And they were decent balls. Not good for us.
