Transition from Option running team to pass first team...

Nebraska went from a power-I option team to a west coast offense under Shanahan. It was brutal and was done so poorly Nebraska still hasn’t recovered.

Texas A&M went from I formation option to West Coast under Sherman. He at least had the wisdom to pull back on the West Coast offense and switch to more run based while he recruited. He basically became TAM version of Gailey.

GaSo went from option to whatever under BvG. Then to the air raid under Hatcher. They didn’t get their feet back until they returned to the option. But that was because they hired a good coach, rather than the offense.

These are under center option offenses. Utah,UF, and Miss St have all undergone changes from Meyers’ shotgun option offense (even if they don’t call it that).

Then there is Michigan, WF, and Zona that all transitioned into and out of RichRod’s shotgun option.

Our transition isn’t going to be easy, but it doesn’t have to be horrendous. If we truly are a personnel based system, we should win at least a handful of ACC games. If we keep trying to force the square peg in the round hole, we are done winning for this year.

And I think the Citadel loss was on Patenaude trying to force an offense that wasn’t working. He has got to start going with the guy with the hot hand instead of distributing the snaps.

Bill Callahan took over at Nebraska

Like in overtime or the last whole quarter
I think the ineptitude after the first quarter was enough to shut down any lofty notions of trying something different this year. I mean what could be a more obvious message than what you're calling isn't even working against an FCS team? What the hell were the coaches seeing in practice to think the passing playbook was even on the table? Does the defense not go full speed in practice and leave guys open? No stopwatch to let a guy know when he'd be sacked?

My biggest fear is that the coaches know we can't execute the passing packages but the alternative is a run game that can't gain yards without cut blocking and triple option formations.

That’s exactly true. They are trying to display what the offense will be for recruits. If we had 1 QB that could do it all he would be out there the whole time.

It’s all about recruiting. This really is year 0

It isn't about one guy being able to do everything. The only things that worked were some QB scrambles and some pitches, neither of which is part of the new look. We can't even display a semblance of an offense against an FCS team. Our OL couldn't open up holes against an FCS front even if we wanted to run every down, and the passing was laterals for two yard losses and incompletions to FCS - smothered tight ends. We had a nice jump ball for the long touchdown pass where our guy was turned around in the end zone waiting for it, but we had that over the past 11 years.

I don’t know. The plays Oliver was running were plays Temple used. I’m not sure I want a recruit who isn’t smart enough to see we are using what we have.

Just to clarify, by pass first I didn't mean air raid. I mean teams like UGA or Bama who have complex, modern passing attacks even though they really are run first teams. Think more like Clemson who might not be pass first but do throw a ton and don't depend on a power running attack.

We could have transitioned to a pistol type running team or what Malzahn is known for: run first and simpler pass routes and throws sort of like Johnson's offense but not under center and not a Flex bone BUT that isn't the plan and doesn't seem to be what the fans wanted anyway.
After the coaches repeatedly talked about suiting the offense to the personnel I assumed an offense based around Malzahn's concepts was a no brainer. It gets to shotgun which Patenaude seems to prefer but still allows us to take advantage of the minor strengths our team had.

Oops. My memory was off. But they definitely went from option to west coast, which is a complete mismatch for the personnel.
Yep and i think they did finish like 8-7 or something, but he mostly aborted the West Coast passing game at some point in the season and went run heavy.
