regarding O'leary leaving GT

CPJ was better than O’Leary & Fridge, but anything seems better than currently.

CPJ was an amazing tenure. I salivate for three ACc title games, 3 wins in Athens, and two incredible orange bowls.
Really??? I like CPJ, but his lack of Defense and revolving door at DC.. Lost to MTSU... The Blowout in the Bowls in 2008 & 2009... Zero wins against UGA at Bobby Dodd... Losing to Duke on the regular...Losing to VT & Miami more often then not....

Yes 2008 until the bowl game was fun, 2009 and the ACC title was great until the OB blowout..... 2014 was great (except the loss to FSU in the ACC game) however teh OB win over Miss Sate was asweome.... 2016 was ok.... but outside of 2008, 2009, 2014, and 2016.... Really CPJ era was just Meh....

I will say this, had CPJ had all the $$$ and support thrown at him that CGC has...CPJ might have been able to win a few more ACC titles and some more games....

That being said I want CGC to get it right at Georgia Tech, however he might have to get a new OC to get us going!!

I'll take the excitement of '89 and Natty of '90, the rise of & Heisman year of JoeHam and the Friedge O and 3 IAR over PJ's regime though the 3 PJ mutt beatings were awesome. Obvious bias since I was a student during all of Boss Ross years.

Problem with PJ is that he was always Mr. "Almost" - he never had that perfect season. Plus, he let a few very-winnable games vs the mutts turn into losses (2009,10,13,15) that would've really turned plenty of fans into PJ Fanboys.

2008 - awesome but blown out by LSU in Peach Bowl
2009 - worst loss of the PJ Era at home to a bad mutt team + boring loss in OB + ACC Champ that was forfeited. Great ACC Champ but the team ultimately lost 2 of its last 3 games.
2014 - losses to Duke and UNC had no one excited about 2014 until the last few games. But couldn't close the deal and lost to FSU in ACC-CG. OB victory was nice but we ultimately watched the CFP when we could've been playing in it instead.

The other ACC-CG appearance only happened because of Miami and UNC not being eligible. I think we had a losing record that year or close to it.

Yea, 2016 was horrible to watch. I hated every second of it.

Give me a ööööing break.
A 4 loss season and no trip to the ACC

you just liked beating Georgia. I hear you. That was a great game. Doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen again any time soon.

I’ve been saying that for three weeks now, and every just big cries me because JuIcE!

Fridge would have left Maryland to come back to Tech, but Mac Mcwhorter did want the job. He was well thought of by the players, a good recruiter and a helluva OL coach. Gailey was a complete dud.

So is Brian Bohannon and he would have been as good a candidate to replace CPJ as Monken.

A good coach is a good coach. If they can coach our players up, win consistently while running a clean program it shouldn't matter where they matriculated.

Meh. If McWhorter had "it" somebody would have seen it. Complete dud is a bit of an exagerration for Gailey. Oh god, why are we talking about this?

O'leary w/o fridge was a 4-4 in the acc coach. I remember being at the game when Clemson's QB (Danstler?) ran the qb sneak for about 300 yds on us (loss)

then I think the next game I was at Burns fumbles and Fridge's MD (our old OC) kick a 60+ fg to beat us and then I think that was the 3rd loss in row

O'leary was looking for a place to go and he found it just like Ross found the NFL. You can look at the quotes from Ross, O'leary, and Gailey on the difficulty recruiting at GT.

For those of us who were around during those times we have a different perspective and that is why we embraced CPJ. His gimmick offense gave us a fighting chance. We will know in a few years whether CGC was a mistake. Hopefully Monkin will be available if we decide to go back to the option.

GT playing and winning Orange Bowl is a top 5 memory ever for GT football in my lifetime. Actually the CPJ ugag wins are right there too.

time will tell all

Interesting no mention of ACCCG. The OB is more important than that?

CPJ winning percentage at GT - 0.573
GOL winning percentage at GT - 0.612
GOL + Fridge winning percentage at GT - 0.708

There was no such thing as an ACC title game when GOL was here. If there was, we would've likely played in 3 out of 6 seasons under him, as we finished 2nd overall in the conference three times. All this when FSU was a national powerhouse. We played in 3 of 11 with CPJ, only having to win one side of the conference. As for playing in an Orange bowl, the ACC wasn't always tied to it. From 1998-2005, the OB took the Big East OR ACC champion, unless it was hosting BCS national championship, or unless those teams were invited to the championship elsewhere. Only in 2006 has the ACC exclusively been tied to the bowl, as conference champion or runner up (if the champion was in the CFP). We did make it once as champion under CPJ which was a great accomplishment but got destroyed by Iowa that year. The other we made was also great and an excellent win for us but we made it as the 2nd ACC team. If that was available in the late 90's we likely would've made an OB appearance sometime then also. Not discounting anything CPJ did because he was successful here and I enjoyed watching the offense when it was working, but you can't compare his accomplishments to the accomplishments of previous staffs when the criteria are different.

And dooley was an Aubie, and Darrell Royal was an okie and some schools have enough intelligence to not let b.s. school girl crap interfere with their best interest.

Homer’s biggest fault was insisting on hiring head coaches that had previously been H.C.

Mac should have been given a shot. It only made sense with the roster, recruiting, and player loyalty. And finances.
