The NCAA would then not allow non-California teams to play California teams, per the terms of their contract. If Oregon plays Cal, Oregon is in breach of the NCAA contract. Then when other schools play Oregon, they're also in breach of the NCAA contract. Eventually, the breach of contract spreads like a virus and every NCAA school is ineligible to play for NCAA championships. The NCAA contracts could furthermore have monetary penalties for breaching the contracts, not just black-balling from NCAA championships.

The NCAA could just look the other way and not enforce contractual remedies against non-California schools. The TV network contracts with the PAC-12 would probably still be in breach though, if no California schools are eligible for NCAA championships. The TV contracts for the NCAA basketball championship would also be in breach if the nation's most populous state is not allowed to play in it.

60,000 for school scholarship, plus room and board and food is ALL COVERED. Add stipends it’s like cutting a $100,000 check to Each Player. They don’t provide a service at all. They are living the dream with a full ride. It’s not a service for the fans, it’s for themselves.

The biggest payout football players get is admittance to a college they would never otherwise get admitted to.

Aunt Becky paid $250k to get a kid into a college they didn’t qualify for.

I dont think any schools from a state that doesn't allow players to make money would want to schedule games against California schools anyway, since they would be at a huge disadvantage.

NCAA needs to get out ahead of this and reiterate that any school that plays ineligible players will vacate any wins. I doubt they can prevent teams from scheduling games against these teams, since that would probably open up a lawsuit for interfering with free commerce.

If they drag this out long enough to let other states start passing similar laws then it could snowball out of control. They need to put their foot down fast. Send a message to other schools, states, and potential California recruits that you will be blackballed from college football if you go this route.

Best case scenario is that the NCAA does hold strong and other schools refuse to play California schools and carry on without them. A few kids lured by money early on go to California and make a few grand on car wash commercials (and pay taxes on that) and then get to play in a sub-par alternate league with no one watching...I know I wont watch. Other kids with more sense realize it's a bad idea and California college sports fade away.

He said Wednesday that a “neo-plantation mentality” exists under the present system, where coaches and administrators act as “overseers and supervisors” who “own the athlete’s body.”

“I believe the athletes should have the same access to the commercial marketplace that the supervisors and overseers as well as other students have,” he said.

How many college football programs are profitable? I thought most of them were not

You talking about P5, G5, FBS, FCS, Div II, Div III, jr college, NAIA, or what? Pretty sure all of P5 football programs are profitable. Obviously that's different from athletic departments, though almost all of them are profitable, too.

This. Techs football program is profitable but the rest of the sports create a deficit when all the money is thrown into the pot.

Only mens basketball and football generate revenue. Those will be the only school supported sports, all others will have to become club sports or dropped completely.

It’s not that it’s wrong and I agree with you. It’s that the dawgs are going to have way more opportunities to line up endorsements for tv or radio or private businesses for these guys. And the athletes are going to get paid more money because of the exposure uga has. It just will increase the deficiencies we’ve already had. I’m glad you’ve stuck by the program all this time. Good to have a good former player like you to give us some good insight.

No, I think we all understand what's going on. Most comments are just attempting to explore the ramifications of the California law and how far it and deep it will effect collegiate athletics.

No, I think we all understand what's going on. Most comments are just attempting to explore the ramifications of the California law and how far it and deep it will effect collegiate athletics.

Just a bunch of hyperventilating honestly. I have even seen people this will create animosity in the locker room. Lol what? So I’m suppose to be mad that Calvin likeness generates more money the mine? That’s horrendously stupid. Bills like this probably will make SA take their classes even more serious now in effort to maximize their earnings outside of school

I don't. The scenario I'm worried about is what there are some players that sign agents and get $100ks of dollars or more while others basically get nothing except what GT gives them. I think that will cause problems in the locker room.

So I support the endorsement part of the California law but think the income should be capped in the $20-40k range. I don't like the idea of players having an agent in college.

This generation is all about entrepreneurship and going viral. I highly doubt many of any get an agent. Athletes days are already long enough, last thing i need to worry about is someone else pockets. More than likely guy ms would come together and get money together

You haven't offered any comment on the possibility that endorsements will just be a giant loophole for boosters to pay recruits...? Or do you think that's OK too?

I don't even think you can call it a loophole. It is going to be a direct effect. Schools are going to directly sell recruits on being able to lineup lucrative endorsement deals for them.
