Third down/money down at UNC game

They should announce the name of the opposing RB and then say, "COME ON DOWN!" Then the band plays this:

This. It should be an untouchable part of game day on the flats. F-Tuning has been the best third down panic attack-soundtrack in the nation since I was a kid.
I wish they would start playing it again on third downs. The PA guy can still say that it's money down or whatever, I just think that f-tuning is really good at getting everyone to yell.

FWIW, the band seems to have a disconnect the past few years with the game. It's like maybe they had a drum major/conductor that "knew" football better than what they have now. They've upped the tempo of F-tuning somewhat for when teams are running hurry up offense, but it seems the band always stops playing WAY before the ball is snapped now. It felt like they used to hold that last note out as long as possible and it just kept building the energy.

The team can be given a foul if the band plays over the snap and the refs feel like it affects the opposing offense hearing the snap count or things like that. The few times I can think of the band playing "Chords" has been on 4th downs when the opposing offense decides late that they're going for it and the band has to squeeze it in.

I noticed that the PA announcer alternated between saying "It's third down!" and "It's money down!" seemingly at random during the UNC game. Pivotal downs were equal parts third/money. Do you think this is some official mandate from the GTAA, or is it because he got embarrassed saying money down?

I also heard our band playing f-tuning on random downs, which weirds me out having heard it on every third down for at least 20 years.
It seems like the band has been ordered by to not play on 3rd down at all. Since they have always played "Chords" on 3rd down, they may have just moved it to 2nd down or something so it's actually heard on gameday.

I understand that but it's like we stop it waaaay before the opposing team is even close to being set. Way earlier than other bands are stopping when we're on 3rd down offense.

It’s a product of drum majors not knowing what they are doing.

Back when I was in the band, the band was made up mostly of a bunch of people who were really interested in Tech sports and looking for a way to go to a lot of games and maybe influence the game while there. We certainly understood our role as being disrupters.

The current makeup of the band looks to have a lot of people who could give a öööö about sports and are there for other reasons. From a music perspective they are better than we were. But they need to learn the art of affecting the game.

A lot of the band people and band parents I’ve encountered in the last 20 years or so (not just at Tech) seem to think that the band is the show and not just window dressing for the football game.

If they are the show, they should play louder. I have always been impressed by how relatively quiet our band is for having so many members.

A lot of that translates from high school where the bands and band parents have to do that to keep the band programs from being dismantled. They just don’t get it out of their systems.

I just enjoyed going to football and basketball games. I met some great friends in the band.
