This makes me sick. It sounds like UGA football has

The entire reason they added an engineering program was because they didn't land Calvin Johnson. And the BOR let them do it.

They built a 30mm dollar facility and invested all of that money because they missed one five star recruit? A recruit that was "Chan-ball'd" to death and never beat them?

My friend you are functionally retarded.

What are those #s?
When I was in school in '94-99, we were bringing in USD900M annually on grants, etc. It's easily over a 1.5B per year now. Georgia might clear 100M on a good year for research NOW. That may have been the true driving force for creating an engineering school there. While their football program is flush with cash, they were laying off staff in their educational departments. Our athletic programs struggle, but we have regular problems with people "misappropriating" research money because it's pretty much just laying around everywhere.

I want everyone to take an adventure in imagination with me. Let’s travel to the third floor of the Skiles classroom building. On that floor is a small janitor’s closet, with a standpipe blocking 40% of the entrance.

Behind the standpipe is an old desk, circa 1938, with a broken leg. On the desk is an IBM Selectric typewriter. The ground plug is broken off and the ribbon has been cycled through twice already.

On the door of that janitor’s closet is a sign that says “Georgia Tech School of Journalism."

That’s UGA engineering. We know it. They know it. And the AJ Fricking C knows it.

This is a PR story for Ugay. They are not going to ascend to the top of college football because they have a handful of kids majoring in engineering. The article should have directly compared Tech's placement stats/starting compensation/numbers of grads but they didn't because they wanted to leave the false impression that Ugay's numbers were exceptional. Somebody write a letter to the editor and ask them to make a retraction/correction to set the record straight. And then move on. Continuing to whine about it just keeps the story active.

Remember that it took the election of a specific person as Governor so that UGA could add Dooley's name to the stadium. He had to "fire" a couple of other UGA fans in State government that hated Dooley to make it happen.

Football is so important to UGA that they let petty personal conflict get in the way of stuff like that. The are obsessed and there is NOTHING they would not do.

According to this it's 1.05 billion
https://gtrc.gatech.edu/facts-glance

This site tracks research expenditures but only has data up to 2017.
https://ncsesdata.nsf.gov/profiles/site?method=rankingBySource&ds=herd

This has GT at #24 in research expenditures in 2017 with 804 million. John Hopkins by comparison is #1 with over 2.5 billion. Athletics is a drop in the bucket compared to research money.

Yikes. I guess he could allegedly end up in the wrong color of orange. Probably just a misunderstanding.

I am sorry to be the one saying this but they simply do not care if their engineering programs mean anything TODAY. This is a move to take moves slowly and over time. All of you extremely intelligent minds that know there is no comparison are thinking...today. Who runs the state?

This article actually raises some interesting questions. They are giving examples of where having an engineering school made a difference in their recruiting. Albeit a small one, but those couple of players always help. I don't think it hurt us because I doubt we were even in the running for any of them. But it has boosted their recruiting against other factories who also happen to have engineering schools. The quality of our engineering program may work against us with most of these kids as it may be seen as too hard to pair with pre-NFL football.

I had no idea they already had 2,400 students and that their engineering school has grown that fast. I'm not sure how many of those kids could have gotten into GT. But even if it is only 20% that is almost 500 students. And where they are really hurting us in this regard is that is 500 kids that are probably interested in football and sports programs. Since it seems fewer of GT's students fall into that category than previously that has the long-term consequences of shifting a growing percentage of alumni into those who won't be likely to support GTAA.

I do have a question for the engineers on the board, especially more recent grads. The UGA guy quoted basically says that UGA engineers graduate ready for practical tasks while GT engineers are preparing for research and academics. Is that a correct interpretation and comparison of the two schools? One of my father's cousins was an ag engineer who ended up as a county agent. It used to piss my father off when he wore a UGA Engineering ballcap to family reunions. In his advanced deteriorating health I don't want him to ask me if it is now UGA engineers who are building bridges and putting man on the moon.

uga teaches applied engineering while GT teaches theoretical engineering.

The difference is that between a Nurse Practitioner and a Doctor. An NP is fine if you have the flu or an ear ache. But the second something isn’t routine you need a doctor. As a result, a nurse practitioner will always work for a doctor.

On an even more practical point, a uga engineer will spend their career answering the question “why didn’t you go to Tech?”
