Yeah but that’s kind of what I’m getting at - it made more sense with CPJs offense. JT5 was a monster in our offense but wasn’t gonna be drafted early no matter how well he played. So the 5th year was a lock. Similar things could be said for most of the offensive positions. If I’m not mistaken we didn’t have a single offensive player drafted early since 2009. So getting those 5th years was more of a reality. To the point where you might risk putting in a worse player into a game to maintain a RS for another player.

With a more conventional offense these guys that are good enough for us to want to keep around are more likely to leave early anyway. And with more “roster management” you’re less likely to have a guy for 5 years anyway. I don’t think there should be many scenarios under CGC where we decide to play a worse option to maintain a RS.

So just be smart about it. Don’t throw a guy in for garbage time in 5 games. But if somebody can give you meaningful snaps - even just a few - in some games, then get him on the field. That’s what I say at least.
The new rules for redshirting and the transfer portal are going to make big changes in everybody's personnel management. I think our staff is probably better suited to the new frontier. I just hope the NCAA can keep from totally corrupting the transfer portal--it seems they are already playing favorites as to who can and who can't keep their eligibility.

I really wished we would have redshirted Griffin. I would think he would realize he’d have more time to showcase himself for the NFL with more space between himself and Mason especially since our OLine will be a lot better in 3 years than it is now. I understand wanting to play but no one will remember 2019 when we are throwing up wins in 2021 and beyond.

Would not surprise me to see Griffin be a good contributor on this team before the year is over

It is pretty common these days to have a three back rotation. Keeps bodies fresh and gets younger guys experience

I love Griffin don’t get me wrong. And I get the rotation aspect. I’m just looking big picture. This season, while interesting, is a wash. I want Griffin toting the rock when he’s a 23 year old senior more than a handful of carries in 2019. But if we keep getting stud RBs then I guess it’s a wash.

You realize that he has the biggest potential of the backs that we have?

He's been in as a 3rd down back a lot this year. His value and experience can't be measured by only his carries.

James Graham is showing promise and ability so if he continues to develop by end of season to reliable QB he becomes the favored in place starter. It never hurts to have 2 quality QBs so I feel him and Yates will be great ultimately you can never be sure how it plays out... Graham by his Junior year could be a 6'1 - 6'2 210-215 QB similar to Lamar Jackson type successful QB would may have draft potential in a NFL league who has moved to accepting QB profiles like that...so if Yates redshirts this year that scenario gives you Yates as a 2 year starter and ideally thats what you hope for anyway... a rotation of qbs that hang around for 3 year ish and move on talent train

Also, I don’t think he wants to play college ball for 5 years.
This. Not using him this year would be just a waste. If you redshirt him, he likely leaves for the league after his RS Junior year.

We need to have quality depth at QB. Graham has already missed time this season. The Miami QB separated his shoulder against us. The UT QB has left two straight games with concussions. QB's are prone to injury.

Especially mobile ones like Graham

It is not unheard of to redshirt for the soph. year. If and when recruiting is improved, I think you will see all sorts of "roster management" moves.

Wonder if Yates will start challenging Graham for the starting job.

Next year that is.
Graham will have a big leg up, but I'm sure the competition will be open next year and if Yates or even Gleason can beat him, so be it. Graham has certainly shown the skill set and potential to be our QB of the future. But by no means has he established himself as the definite starter next year or beyond. Way too early for a declaration like that. Competition is king.

I absolutely realize that which is why I want him on the roster when the games actually matter. 2019 is just a an extension of spring practice. And the worry about Griffin going pro early - I’m all for it. But until GT players start leaving early I’m not going to factor that in. If our recruiting gets to that point then we won’t have much to talk about except where to get ACCCG tix.

RBs have a short shelf life. I'm all for playing them as freshmen when they're nice and uninjured.

Name the last RS Sr great running back we've had. If they're awesome they'll go pro and we should play them sooner than later

OL and DL is a completely different story. You've got to get those guys up to size. RS Sr DL and OL are valuable

Maybe he was told that he was going to play and he told the coaches that he doesn't want to redshirt. Has that ever occurred?
