Surrender Punt

100% totally agree as I questioned in the game day thread as well. Flat out poor coaching decision.

Kicking it away down 10 with about 5:00 to play is horrible. Might as well wave the white flag instead and walk off the field with your head down.

That’s all.
There were many moments when it seemed like we were making non-competitive play calls. Near the end of the 2Q we had 3d and 15 at our own 10 or thereabouts. We call a draw, gain 4 yds or something. Very unlikely that play gets 16 yds. Why not try a longer pass there? We were going to be punting with very little time on the clock anyhow.

That was not a bad call...end of 2nd quarter

It's defensible clock management. Giving the other team 1:45 for a drive is a substantial difference from 1:10, or whatever they ended up with. Or maybe they had to burn a timeout, can't remember.

Agreed. Which means CDP thought there wasn't much of a chance we'd convert the first down.

I liked the call at the end of the half. 17-7 gives you a chance to regroup at half, get the ball to start the second half and have a chance to win in the second half (which we did). 24-7, you are pretty much dead.

The end of the game, we were pretty much dead either way. Probably as good a chance for them to do something stupid (fumbled punt) as us to do something heroic.

End of second quarter we stopped them and they were about to punt but we just let them off the field like we didn’t even want them ball

Why are so many of you still worried about wins vs losses. We are not winning this year. Our lines are bad. It sucks but this year is about survival and recruiting, not wins or losses. The fact that we actually have won 2 games and played hard yesterday shows that Collins knows what he is doing. Collins can’t say what he wants to say nor should he, but any smart football fan can see what is going on. This off season we are going to see so much processing that they are going to have to build an on ramp between 10th St. and North Ave. for the portal.

I would hate to have to do offensive play calling for this offense maned as it is presently. I agree with option jacket, I never got into the W/L mindset for this year, where we are is pretty close to where I thought we would be.
Every time in my life(and I been around a while) I've gotten on board with a man on a mission I've come out a winner. In my very, very strong opinion CGC is a man on a mission. I'm watching and already enjoying. I think CGC knows what he is doing, will he make mistakes, you betcha, people who don't make mistakes are not bigtime winners in the long run. Winners move on and overcome their mistakes. If you don't make mistakes you're going to be out of business eventually 'cause you're more than likely playing with a "scared stick".

That is the Rip Sherer Honorarium call in that situation.

Or, if you throw an INT and they run it back then you're in a big hole and the other team has all the momentum.
Good lord. What a pussy way to play. We aren't Alabama that can just go to the locker room knowing we can shove the ball down the other team's throat to start the second half. We are a team that needs to kick and scratch and dig and fight for every single point

Related to some other posts, I think our calls are less about taking risky options to increase chance of win/blowout and more about decent plays that won't wreck morale. That's probably the more complicated way of thinking about it, simpler answer is we rather put the game on the shoulders of our best unit and the unit that already forced 3 turnovers.
