Bill Shanks interviews PJ

I've always wondered what would have happened had we won the 2009 Ugag game. I think winning would have put his stamp on the program and established GT with in-state coaches, fans, and recruits. As it was, it was the biggest upset in series history (in terms of overcoming a games won differential). We were left with them on our field after the game flying a We Run This State flag, and beginning a 7 in a row win streak. 2014 and 2016 we great wins, but they weren't a chance to establish superiority like that would have been.
I've always thought along these same lines. Crushing loss....we win that one and the media is on CPJ's side and the hype builds ...... CMR is in trouble..... everything just goes our way. Recruits take notice.

Instead they run the damn state and he's labeled as Fish Fry and we never get that early momentum back.

Not that your idea does not have merit, but it would be very “Tech like” to destroy something unpaid for and add more debt to replace it with something that would not be revenue enhancing.
You wouldnt have to destroy it. Just build the upper part into a platform and install it. Nothing would get torn down.

Yep. And the NCAA and dirty players from UNC working for the NCAA were integral to that loss, in my opinion.

I am still very concerned about the Hill. The email from the new president that went out today discusses academic initiative but never mentions athletics. He had a whole section on Homecoming without referencing the football team or the game in any way. He does mention the band and the glee club. My impression from this is that he could care less about the athletic program.

I've actually felt quite the opposite. I think he has been more supportive (at least publicly/on social media) of GT athletics (and athletics in general) than any other president I can remember.

If you want GT to be a place where the athletics are emphasized over the academics and you have a Michael Adams-type president who is really just the Athletic Director Director, you’re going to be forever disappointed. GT is a world-renowned engineering and research institute, and athletics are never going to outweigh that like they would at some run of the mill state school educating TV anchors and kindergarten teachers.

I agree and almost posted something along those lines but there is no reason we can't be like Stanford in Football or Duke in Basketball. I'm sure there are other examples but those were the 1st that come to mind.

Given that GT is in ATL which is a hot bed of college and high school football, I see no reason that we can't succeed at football while also being a world class academic school.

Thanks. I hope you are right. Based on your other posts, you seem to be well informed.

I guess we will know in a few years where we stand. I remember for a decade it was 4-4 in conference b/f PJ got here. It is not encouraging to hear money issues at the same time the NCAA is getting ready to allow players to be paid.

I feel very fortunate to have seen GT in two orange bowls and 3 wins over ugag. I really hope we have similar success in the future.

In what way does spending money on a revenue making sport de-emphasize academics?

Not to mention Ga Tech is supposed to be the institute that excels and wins in all phases of life for these student athletes.

He also said it was a 2 way street. The kid had to have interest in GT. The reality is the system constrained top talent more then the school IMO. PJ has never stated that but I think we will see that proven to be true over these next recruiting classes.

Yeah, this 2 way street thing is interesting.

It boggles the mind that he harps on that without seeming to realize that was a huge part of his job - to make GT interesting to recruits.

Coach - Hello stud player. I am Coach Millionaire from GT. Are you interested in GT?
Recruit Stud - not really coach. I dont know much about the school.
Coach - goodbye.

Jeez, how many here hire sales people who stop selling at no?

How many here would have never married their wives if she had shown no interest in going out on the first date?

You can believe we will no longer lose a recruit because they simply showed no interest.

Maybe just some more reputation.

Rather spend the money doing the hard things - beating ugag to start with.

It is worth it.

Yeah, I love PJ and think he is an all-time great offensive coach and overall a very good coach but his attitude about recruiting was a cop out at best. He is technically right but if you aren't getting enough interest from your current "pool" of prospects then you have to increase or change the "pool" or do something to change their perceptions about you. Working hard and putting time into recruiting isn't the same as being good at it.

Kyle Field it. We can fit a few more Upper Norths onto the Upper North.

Could interfere with future pre-game fly bys.

In this post we all act surprised that Tex throws shade on CPJ even going to the extent of adding wildly hyperbolic fantasy to deepen said shade.
