VT was a thorough beatdown but we looked like we were confused, lost and couldn’t do basic, rudimentary football stuff.

Ima breakdown a few plays on offense show why Saturday was a day to forget

Blocking:
This is so bad. This is a day 1 install play
outside split zone. This one play sets up 5-10 other plays. Problem is 3 different positions groups are doing 3 opposite things.

Let’s start with the OLine. Quinney has a defender on his outside shoulder and should be fighting to get his helmet across the defender chest. Instead e blocks down and leaves a unblocked defender

-or-

This was a read option and James missed the read for what appears to be for a big gain.

Perimeter blocking. This may be the 2nd biggest thing we’ve regressed in. We are atrocious blocking on the edge. To see a 250lb TE get physically beat by a safety on a block is disheartening.

OL: Graham can’t even complete his play fake before there is pressure. I must admit, Southers did a great job blocking Casper on this play. His defender is no where in sight. I’ve never seen a pro where a Tackle didn’t block anyone

Bad decision making.

Hit the flat or throw the ball away.

Creative chaos

Patenaude attempted to give an unscouted look and we bombed it
1) This play had disaster written all over it. Instead of spreading out, VT defense compressed and brought nearly 8 guys to the LOS. This had a high a chance for a TFL. Not sure what happened to Lay, but Scott Morgan was at Center on this play

1st time i felt we really regressed in the process and not sure where everyone mind is now and definitely this past weekend. Let’s hope we bounce back Thursday night with a packed.

I’ll do some defensive plays later, if my blood pressure can take it

Our offense played out of this world against UVA so I was worried about a let down and that seems to be what happened. Lot of inexperienced players that don't know how to get ready for games. Coaches deserve blame also.

Also, VT had 2 years of payback built up and they were more than ready to play.

On that first 1, man it looks like the run should have been to the right. I guess Graham should have run after a fake but it seemed wide open and we had them leveraged.

The INT happened right in front of me and I couldn't believe it. I have zero idea what he was thinking.

Sometimes players have good games and get a false sense of over-confidence that leads them to not prepare as fully as they should. Not saying this is the case but it sure seems like Graham has come out very flat twice after playing really good the week prior. Hopefully he can put it all behind him and be laser focused these last 2.

And by the way I'm in no way pinning this L on him, we were pitiful all around. Just was stating what I'd noticed about James.

That’s an excellent analysis. There is some lack of coaching.
From a broad perspective it looks like a bunch of small players getting beat up badly by bigger stronger players.

It's also a case of VT defense coming together for Bud's last season. I saw it during these VT Wake Forest game and became very concerned.

I just thought the team, mentally, was not ready to play. Between Glanton bulldozing Buzz on the run out from the tunnel and then taking a delay of game on the very first offensive down, it was just a complete farce from the get-go. I don't know if they just expected it to be easy after having a bit of a break through against Virginia or if it was just mental fatigue from so many games in a row. But, their heads were not in that game.

Thank you for doing this. We love to complain about how our guys are too small, too slow, etc. But it's pretty clear in those clips that we made a ton of inexcusable mistakes that have nothing to do with athletic ability. This is probably not the best time for a short week, but it is what it is. Fix the mistakes and come out on fire next time.

We were just setting nc st up. Vegas is on to our game.

Thanks to the OP.

Graham has run hot and cold in crummy situations all year. He has tried hard. All due respect, if he ends up being the best QB on the roster by fall camp 2021, then that will be a huge problem.

We've had a lot of injuries but that shouldn't make kids with game experience play like they don't have a clue. Either VPI did a lot of things (plays, formations, stunts) that were new or our coaches didn't prepare very well for what they had been doing.

But the DL is a mess. We started 2 walk-ons, a redshirt freshman, and a converted LB. Plus a frosh DE from Europe saw a lot of action. Also, Harris started at WR. Does anyone know why? It appears he leapfrogged Brown, Carter, and Sanders.

We're getting ready for NC State!

Tech teams getting confident and then losing a game they shouldn’t (or losing in a way they shouldn’t) is nothing new. One of the most frustrating parts of being a Tech fan and something at the top of my list for things I hope CGC fixes.

Bad coaching... plain and simple.
Oversimplifying does not help.

IBB has put a good bit of time and effort into a more thorough diagnosis of the underlying issues. The least you can do is acknowledge his effort and make a meaningful observation.
