I'm really surprised at how many folks here aren't giving coach a pass this year?

CPJ retired. Period, end of discussion. That’s on him. We had to hire a coach and CGC is who we picked. I suppose we could have gone Monken and stuck with that style, but excitement in the program had really dwindled since the Orange Bowl season. We needed some juice and we hired Mr. Juice himself.

The sooner people can let go of what our retired former coach did or did not do well, the better their sanity will be as Tech fans. If you’re only a Tech fan because you liked the option, then Kennesaw State is right down the road and could use more fan support.
I do not disagree with you but wonder why, if the excitement level is up, is attendance lagging?

Here's what I see:

Underdog, on the road, down 10 in the 3rd quarter, so there's room to take some risk.
Ball is nearly in the middle of the field, its a 37 yard field goal. But you are down 10 and its 4th and 3 (not 4th and 10), CPJ wants a touchdown.
Trot the offense out with a play, based on the way the defense is lined up on the fake offsides/time out play, run the play or switch to the field goal. Defense is lined up with a single high safety instead of the double they showed earlier, so audible to the FG team instead of running into the walked up safety (true, this isn't standard practice).
A young Kenny Cooper ran onto the field, but then ran off, so there were 10 men on the field -> visible confusion -> no snap. CPJ gets in his face about it, but then cools down quickly because now, the worst case kicks in and Harrison Butker kicks a 42 yard field goal. BFD. Took a chance at retaining possession, on the road, with very little downside. Looked dumb and didn't work because of a freshman mistake, but IMO, wasn't a bad way to try to steal 4 points.

For the record, if there would have been 11 guys on the field, they had time to snap the ball.

For transparency, I liked the see-how-they-line-up, try-to-get-them-offsides, call-a-timeout play as the long con that payed off in the 2009 ACCCG vs Clemson. Confirmation bias says if you hate it, it never worked, but we got multiple first downs on penalties and ran a play for a key first down several times. Also, I liked CPJ and I like CGC, neither are perfect.
So what you’re saying is that it’s not as easy as saying “omg delay of game on the opening play==bad coaching”

Cause we suck. Not many people like watching bad football.
Doesn’t mean there’s not a good reason we suck, but we still suck.

when we get better, so will attendance.

  • I think the 3O switch is less impactful than everyone is making it out to be. CPJ beat UGA in his first year without "his players".
The problem isn't that Collins doesn't have "his players".

The problem is that Collins is coming in after a recruiting staff that hasn't had a single non special teams player drafted in the past 3 years. Whereas CPJ inherited what may have been the most talented GT team in the 21st century.

Let's not embarrass everyone's intelligence by pretending that what Collins and CPJ had in terms of players available to them was remotely the same thing.

It's very hard to believe that they actually wanted to run a play when the center sent in after the timeout was the field goal center. And if they did actually want to possibly run a play, then it was a really bad decision to send out the FG center on a crucial 4th down to run a play, when you could have simply swapped them as well, when you did the swap.

They changed centers, it was just really late. Freddie Burden stayed on the ball and bails really late, but #61 is there for the would-be snap on the field goal.

There are like 2 people who hate Collins.

Most everybody else (myself included) is just butthurt about losing, because losing ööööing sucks. GT isn't a losing program, and nobody here will be happy when we lose. So in terms of "getting a pass" it depends on what you mean by that. Am I pissed when we lose 45-0 and look pathetic in every phase of the game? Absolutely. Do I want the coach fired? Hell no. He's made a lot of positive changes, and it's obvious that we've got a lot of potential.

Complaining about bad football is what fans do. We've played plenty of bad football this year, so I would be more alarmed if people WEREN'T upset about a 4-8 season.
Complaining is what fans do, because fans like to complain.

Agree 100%. I saw improvement throughout the year. OL blocking last night was not bad. Special teams did well. With all the injuries and walk-ons playing, I'm surprised that engineers have a hard time thinking logically about our play. Most of the negative posters are way too emotional. I wonder if most of them are Democrats.
The only time all year that there wasn't improvement in some facet of the game was the VT game which was disappointing, however to come back out 5 days later, play hard and get a win says a lot about the personality of the team. After the VT drubbing our guys could have felt sorry for themselves and mailed it in last night, but they didn't. It's tough when a team is losing and I think our guys probably hit a wall last week that served as a wake up call and reminder that they have to be ready to play every week with no let downs, or prepare to be embarrassed.

At any rate, it's amazing the difference a win can make on the demeanor of those posting on a message board. Last week was fire and pitch forks, and today unicorns and rainbows. Sports, and specifically GT sports, is a beautiful thing.

Yes. Please tell us more, white knight, about the virtues of true Tech fandom. :bfd:

Cheerleading Collins apologists and CPJ/option loyalists only see everyone as one or the other, including OP.

Criticizing this staff for full retart stuff /= fire them today and bring CPJ back

Paul used to say fans don't ask for much -- they just expect you to win one game a week. He was wrong. Apparently Geoff figured out that Tech fans will accept one win a month so long as they get sunshine pumped up their ass in the interim.

We just had a three win season and y'all are like "Yep, just like we expected" except not a goddamn one of y'all predicted a three-win season in August.

I thought we’d win more but then Parker Braun transferred and Brandon Adams passed away. THEN we didn’t get the NCAA waiver for Clayton. Those 3 guys on the LOS would have made a world of difference for us this season.

And that’s just before we lost 10 other players due to injury during the rebuild. CGC should get a total pass on the season. We look much improved on offense with less actual scholarship players to work with. I’m actually impressed with what they’ve been able to do.
