Expectations for next year

What are your expectations for next year? We are transitioning from Paul Johnson's Option Offense to whatever Geoff Collins Offensive coordinator decides to install; but the first year will be about creating an offense for the players you have, not the players you want. You get Benson back, you no doubt have a better quarterback, an experienced TE, plenty of skill position players. We will probably get out manned in 3-4 games; but I am confident Ralph Friedgen could put together a potent offense with what is there, so should whoever our OC ends up being.. Add a DC who can coach a mediocre defense and we should be a bowl eligible team. It will be a big job to do during transition; but going 8-5 in the ACC Coastal with a couple of FCS games thrown in isn't some impossible goal.

So here is my expectation for next year:

8-5 with a top 30 recruiting class is the goal, anything above that is outstanding.
6-7 is the base with a top 40 recruiting class, with a likely bowl game in Shreveport or some place. Anything below that will be a disappointment.

This may have already been addressed but we only play 12 games ya know.

And what year are you expecting a Top 30 class?

Last 20 years:

100% of 3+ wins
95% of 5+ wins
90% of 6+ wins
85% of 7+wins
45% of 8+ wins
30% of 9+ wins
10% of 11+ wins
0% of 12+ wins

How do you want to set your minimum bound? Using a Scree plot would say expectation is 7+ wins. Using a 90% cut-off would say 6+ wins.

I suppose your argument is that GOL, CCG, and CPJ have all under performed and our bar should be set higher. That’s about as valid as stating our bar should be 15 wins per season.

Yes they did all under perform. In this öööö league if we are not winning 8 games we are failing.

Coastal Division is wide open for the taking the next few years. 6-6 would be a good first season. Going to be tough with all the option players we have.

Bowl game you freaking idiot. Do us all a favor take a gum put it in your mouth and chew it excessively.

Since you live at [redacted] I’ll be right over to pound on your door and bring you gifts like you’ve never seen in your life.

I’ve never wanted Tech to lose. Never. I never liked the offense but I never wanted us to lose. I never pulled against Johnson. You however have repeatedly posted your disdain for Collins. You’re a fantastic fan.
Not sure where you're getting that from. Collins was by far my top choice of the options mentioned. He's undoubtedly going to improve our recruiting.

You may not have wanted us to lose, but you and a few others have done a damn good job of ööööting all over the success GT has had over the past 11 years. I don't understand why some people can't acknowledge the success of the previous coach while still being excited about the next one.

I'm sorry, but that is just setting yourself up for failure. We're not going to be a great team EVERY year. We just aren't, and the past 50 years is pretty clear evidence. More recently, O'Leary and Johnson were excellent coaches, and even Gailey was above average. The results are still pretty much the same. We should be in a bowl every year with the occasional 10+ win team when we recruit well and find a couple of elite players.

My expectations for the first season are that the team plays hard and embraces the new principles.

Special teams is top half in conference. Defense is up and down, with exciting plays and disappointing breakdowns. It will tend to wear down late in games. Offense develops a strong ground game and the quarterback plays above expectation by not being an obvious disaster. The offensive key will be the offensive line, which will surprise in how well they pass pro but like the defense have unexpected breakdowns.

We take care of the cupcakes. We struggle early. We get better as the season goes along. The defense gets ahead of the offense, and establishes its identity first.

Don't care about record. Maybe we go to a minor bowl. Maybe we fall just short. The Geoff supporters will come out of the season pumped and ready to win the recruiting wars. The Geoff detractors will be all see I tole ya so.

I will just be upset every year then, like quite a few in my fan life. 8 wins is a good season, not a great one. We should never be below 8 wins. ACC is crap. One FCS, one G5, and a low P5 every season should be 8 wins if the kids are coached and motivated.

For 2020 I’d like to see 6 wins, but that might be tough with the schedule and other glaring needs. For 2021 I’d like to see 9 wins.

I expected better. It’s a shame when we’re acting like we struck gold because we won our third game in 11 tries. But, alas, I’m trying to stay positive and continuing to drink lots of juice.

And, I guess, a more honest statement would be I hoped for better. I knew coming in there would be a difficult transition. Losing to The Citadel was just absolutely uncalled for and inexcusable.

I hoped for better too. But a lot of people acted like they were completely shocked when the wheels came off at times this season. Some of us were sounding the alarm pretty early on roster issues that would lead to a pretty difficult year.

Nice bump. I didn't do it. But the season happened about like I expected.

There were maybe 3 people in here that predicted 3 wins.
