Freshman Participation and Roster Management

  1. I wonder if this wasn't a conscious effort to play them so that they get experience not only for this year but also for next
  2. It is a fact that we have very few SRs and not really that many JRs so there wasn't a lot of choice
  3. Now, Collins says playing a lot of people is his philosophy so this might not be anything "special". It might be the way we will always play. Red-shirting may be a secondary concern where for most of the last 20 years it was a primary concern for freshmen at GT.
Or weeding out?

Anyone have an update to OP? I'd like to know where we stand in regards to redshirts from our 2019 class with 3 games to play.

Thanks for the reminder. I intended to look at it earlier but I did some chores around the house and then went to see Midway this afternoon.
Several frosh have played the past couple of games. The ones whose eligibility for redshirt is still subject to change are Lockhart, and Wes Walker. It also looks like Kalani Norris crossed the 4 game threshold.

Update:
A. Brown: 9 games
D. Leonard: 9 games (is he PWO or scholarship?)
C. Bennett: 6 games
D. Devenny: 8 games
S. Yondjouen: 8 games
J. Griffin: 6 games
D. Knight: 7 games
K. Norris: 5 games
---------------------------
J. Huff: 3 games
K. Johnson: 2 games
N. Burnett: 2 games

T. Amerson
D. Ellison

If you Redshirt Griffin he's able to leave after his sophomore year and it appears that the really good running backs do just that and I can't blame them with the short shelf life that they have as was mentioned above.

Updated participation list after VPI. 10 games down, 2 to go. Both Kenan Johnson and Mike Lockhart played Saturday for the 3rd time seeing action. They and Jordan Huff are the only remaining freshman who would be ineligible for redshirts if they play in both of the remaining games. Also, Devin Ellison saw his first action of the year.

Appreciate you doing this. The above 3 guys are the only ones that matter based on YTD usage. Coach needs to hold each of them out once more, as it just seems like a waste to go over the cut off by one game. I think Lockhart will be the hardest to hold out due to attrition on the DL...but it needs to happen and makes the most sense to be done against UGA honestly.

Updated participation list with only COFH remaining. Both Kenan Johnson and Mike Lockhart played Thursday night and it was their 4th game. They are the only remaining freshman who would be ineligible for redshirts if they play against UGa. I adjusted some of my previous totals to reflect the tackle chart year t date games listed on ramblinwreck.com.

A. Brown: 11 games
D. Leonard: 11 games
D. Devenny: 11 games
S. Yondjouen: 10 games

Gotta hold the 2 guys with 4 games out. I hate to do it in COFH, but in a lost season from a W/L perspective it would be silly to burn their redshirts with 1 game remaining.

Lockhart plays on the DL and with the shortage of healthy bodies there it might be difficult to hold him out. Johnson could be substituted for without a problem.

Got to do it. What’s the risk...that we play another walkon? It’s a long term decision.

In the past, we had some SAs who chose to end their football days/graduate before using all sports eligibility walk with the seniors. Do we know of any R-soph, Jr, or R-Jr who will do so this weekend?

Neither Johnson or Lockhart are Above the Line for the UGa game. Looks like their redshirts are safe unless we play them in a bowl game.

Edited to add: It looks like 7 of our DLs are freshman. Swift may run for 300.

It’s a decision that pays off 4 years from now. We’ll get to see what walk-on Hinson Fowler has...

Also of note, Lucas Johnson is not listed ATL for this game.

We've clearly been saving him just for this moment. I expect the dwag nation will never want to hear his name again after tomorrow!

Only 8 SRs amongst the ATL. That's good news on top of what may turn into a good recruiting 2020 class.
