Collins

... and here is where sting talk turns poisonous

I can’t believe anyone on this board, big fans who follow CFB closely, thinks we had division 1, let alone power 5, talent.

We have been massively undersized and slow for a few years but a great offensive scheme masked it on that side of ball, while our defense was absolutely atrocious.

We didn’t sign a single lineman in CPJ’s last year. Think about that. Roster management was non-existent. I loved CPJ, thought he was a great fit for us, but I think some of you guys forget how ugly it was started to look then and for the future.

This staff didn’t forget how to run a football program overnight. We just suck. From the beginning of the year, the messaging was about effort and culture, finding leaders, and the future. This year was never about this year. How could it be?

edit to add: if you want a sting talk thread that discusses where we truly stand, objectively, without emotional BS, read this - https://stingtalk.com/board/threads/freshman-participation-and-roster-management.102679/page-4
Couldn't argue any of you're points, good post. Not happy about getting runover yesterday, but never understood why GC kept running Graham out there, try another QB for gods sake!

You bring up valid points...except for this: his staff didn’t forget how to run a football program overnight . Nothing on the resume of this staff shows they have ever run a successful program.
Our most tenured coach, Patenaude, is a 20+ year position coach with just a few years as a coordinator.
Thacker and Collins will have growing pains that may pay dividends . Patenaude, well he hit his potential years ago and it shows.

True. We also had to replace our starting QB, lost everyone with more than 7 receptions, lost our top 3 tacklers, our top 4 pass rushers (not that we really did that in 2019), we had freshman and walk-ons all over the field, we had a crapload of injuries, and we changed offensive systems entirely.

This was not a bowl team even if CPJ stayed.
Get outta here with them facts. Facts have no place in this conversation.

I’m a CPJ guy, but he made his bed, realized it wasn’t comfortable and left. I mean, seriously, he chose to start Taquon at QB for 2 seasons because he stopped recruiting real QB’s after Vad/Thomas. That was a worse decision than anything Patenaude has done. We were going to suck this year no matter who our coach was. So the question I have, would you rather have finished 5-7 with a 45th ranked class or finish 3-9 with a 25th ranked class? Johnson was given 11 years. Collins deserves at least a chance. He will get it done because the players love him and he knows how to manipulate the system for the teams benefit. I loved Johnson but he spent more time whining than he did working the system. Collins is hungry whereas Johnson was content.

All well and good except that we haven't signed the 25th ranked recruiting class.

And sting talk knows all of this because sting talk? Or maybe it’s a bit early in their tenure here, especially given this rebuild, to make that call

Season 1 - F

This was a bowl team talent wise. He is the king of excuses and I never heard him actually acknowledge that we lost a game this year, much less that we got out coached.

Depends on the company, and I’ve certainly built a career off of effort (not talent), but however you get them, results are all that matter to anyone outside the building. If I had that kind of performance in year 1. I’d damn sure have to show big improvement in year 2. If he’s not hitting a C+ (6 wins) next year then I’d at least mandate he fire the OC and make a big jump in year 3 or be fired...buyout be damned

This was not a bowl team talent wise. We have gone bowling 2 of the previous 4 years, and this year the OL and DL would have been extremely thin even if we hadn't changed coaches while breaking in a new QB.

Well, You obviously didn't make a career out of being smart.

Bowl? Bowl? If you think this was a bowl team talentwise you are the most delusional poster ive encountered other than cincy of course.

Nobody was gonna go bowling with a two deep full of walkons. Impossible.

We arent firing this coach anytime soon. He would have to have a catastrophic year 3 for that to be a remote possibility.

I saw nothing on the field this season that gives me hope about next year or the Collins Era moving fwd. Maybe the talent upgrades (transfers in and better recruiting class than in the past) will help, but Collins hasn’t shown me anything positive as a game day head coach yet. Nothing!!

We know - you're a whiny Johnsonian, GTFELCH.

Defense looked promising this year; but it definitely needed some help up front; which looks like it is coming. The defense looked better than I was expecting yesterday in the first half; but 3&outs on the offense took their toll as the game wore on.

Hopefully the O improves as the OLine improves. There is some skill position talent there if the OC can figure out how to use it.

I would take Chan Gailey but prefer George Oleary!!! Look what George Oleary did... takes over a horrible Bill lewis situation in 1994 (GT was 1-10) and wins 6 games in 1995... Geoff Collins takes over a 7 Win bowl team and losses to a bad FCS team, gets shut out by VT, and has the worst loss to Georgi ever only wins 3 games... Nevermind...maybe you all are to young to remember what George Oleary did.... Again Geoff Collins is no where near GOL he is more like Bill Lewis... the record speaks for itself, it can only be Coach Paul Johnson's fault so long....

FWIW... I heard how great Tobais Oliver was, but they never gave him the ball.. I heard how fast Nate Cotrell was..something like 22mph fastest on that gadget they use in practice... but they coud not find any plays for him on offense or use him as a mismatch....I saw nothing on the field this season that gives me hope about next year or the Collins Era moving fwd. IMO if CPJ stayed this year we probably beat the Citadel and trade the Miami game for another team on the schedule. We probably still lose to Temple. He’d probably be getting laid off given the end of his contract.
Yeah and we’d probably just run 70 QB keepers per game with Oliver and continue keeping our porous defense on the sidelines as much as possible to mask the overall deficiency and our poor talent level

So glad that’s in the past. Rather see patentoads offense win 3 games than TO running 1000 read option dives and 5 wins tbh
