Transfer Portal Central

Since we are in the midst of a multi-year transition, do we really want a 1-year guy in such a key position as QB? Seems to me that a top caliber QB would be wasted for a year, since we are still getting our offensive line in order.

I'd rather go with a young QB and let him learn the offense and be ready in 2021.
Depends on if we think Yates is capable. If they don't think so, and Gleason is the future, then it makes sense to take a grad transfer.

So you think freshmen and a sophmore passer come out of the womb knowing how to pass?

Coaches can only teach so much. Helps immensely to have someone to teach by example and be available to "pick their brain."

Should be obvious to any football fan. Obvious.
Not out of the womb, but a lot of QB's start going to passing camps in 6th grade or so.

If "competition is king" then bring in any experienced grad transfers you can fit it under the scholarship limit and let them compete. If they beat out your player for that year, it makes your player work harder to get on the field or transfer. And with the uncertainty of the transfer applications (see Derrik Allen and Antonneous Clayton), I think you'll see the number of players transferring out begin to diminish when they realize they're going to have to sit out a year at their new school, too.

Basically we do not have a QB. Graham and Yates are not going to be D1 quality. The kid we have recruited is a project and has had a dumpster fire senior year in HS. Our best opportunity is to find a transfer of any quality and bring them in while we work toward finding a long term solution via recruiting. Maybe even the Juco route.

Go Jackets!
Disagree on Gleason and the jury is still out on Yates, though I was not terribly impressed with him out of HS.

Agree with this. I have been a Yates cheerleader all along, but I'm just not getting the feel that the staff is sold on him at all. Totally subjective reading on my part.

We were definitely a tough sell to grad transfer QBs last year. Maybe Key thinks he can get this OL in shape quicker than he thought. We've got pretty good receivers.
You are correct. A qb eyeing a move to Georgia Tech would have to seriously consider the risk of playing behind our OL. I think the receivers are there, but if you are banking on having a great year as a springboard to the NFL, you might look elsewhere.

That definitely makes sense. So on the flip side, why would a 1-year QB want to come to GT? Do we have anything to offer in terms of helping his draft stock? There's certainly the benefit of the degree, but I'm guessing he has his eyes set on the NFL.

We now have some good connections to the NFL.

We have coaches that can impart the football knowledge to become an NFL QB.

"Create your own stardom"- We are in a big TV market, so if you come in and do well, you'll likely have lots of eyes on you. NFL teams like that.

I wouldn't be surprised if we target some transfer OL.

We need players with experience to come in and teach, particularly at positions like QB that are a 180 from what we have been doing. Look at Tyler Davis and the TE position. He should be on our sidelines as a grad assistant next year because what he did this year to resurrect an extinct position for us will he remembered for a long time. I hope that Collins gets him a start in coaching.

I think it makes sense to take one or two anyways. Like others have said, extra competition does not hurt. Yates and Graham seem capable of playing slot WR. Get the best players on the field.

Graham has shown flashes of talent. He could be beat out by a capable guy though. Also, injuries do happen, so having extra guys around is always good.

Do you think Brandon Wimbush would have reevaluated his decision and picked GT if he thought he'd play all year here?

Depends if some current OL are processed. Gonna be a thick group (at least as far as bodies go) next year with Cooper coming back, possibly Jahaziel though I think goes back to DL, DeFoor and Hansen will be Srs, Clark, Minihan, Quinney in 3rd year, Maye and Smith 2nd year, plus 6 or 7 freshmen and all of the walk-ons.

we're just really tight on scholly #'s. If nobody leaves we'll have 4 QBs on the roster already. (I do believe Lucas will be gone and seems kinda likely Tobias will eb too, though I'm not counting him as a QB anymore.) But if we're taking a grad transfer QB, we need a QB to leave or play another position. We need those scholly spots for areas of greater need (greater need than a 4th QB, that is.)

Yeah, I am not in favor of bringing in a "warm body", only a clear upgrade and presumed starter from the get-go. Bentley would be that. I'm not sure how many others who end up in the portal would.

OP, change thread title to "Debate Value of Transfer Portal".

No. I think we have three QB's that will never develop into good passers during their college careers.
