Polite Kicking Discussion

Isn’t it unusual that we didn’t really have any directed questions from the media about the kicking battle and what was happening with wells?

CGC hasn’t earned my blind faith that he’s playing the best players when it comes to scoring points, regardless of position.

I’m just scrapping the season and hoping for the best in the next few years. There’s no doubt he’s putting a lot of emphasis on recruiting. Hopefully he’ll be successful in that regard, and hopefully he will be able to coach them when they get here. Time will tell.

I can't remember, was it King or Wells that made the like 50ish yarder that got called back for a penalty or timeout or something in the Miami game?

Perhaps kickers should just chill to some 80’s music before the game.

I just hope we've got a PWO lined up, because these two guys are head cases. Knowing CPJ's intolerance for weakness and fear, it may the frustration of dealing with these two that led to his retirement.

My guess is Wells got hurt. You don’t go from PERFECT to Worse than King without injury.

Hard to not think along these lines. CGC put Wells on scholarship (so that's 2 kickers and a punter), so it isn't like he just doesn't like the kid. Wells walked on, so he isn't likely going to transfer regardless of playing time.

So OP's guess is Collins gave Wells a scholly he wasn't obligated to give, then benched him with no good reason, thus destroying his confidence and wasting a scholarship in the process.

Or might it be more reasonable to think that a professional coaching staff is entirely capable of evaluating a kicker's mechanics and accuracy in practice and Wells just didn't have it this year? Additional evidence for this point of view would be the fact that Wells shanked everything he kicked this year, in warm-ups and games.

In the interest of politeness, I will request that you at least consider not killing yourself.
But we still had the most fun we have ever had playing football. And that's important.

1) I lost count but we seem to have at least 2-3 PWO kickers coming in next year. Maybe they will not all come but we have made the offer and they seem to be excited about coming to Tech.

2) Not sure what King's issue is but he has never been a consistent kicker. Johnson had to bench him. All evidence is that Wells has the yips. He missed a couple of easy kicks in games also so the bottomline is we didn't have a reliable kicker this year. That kills you.

3) I have no idea why he can't adjust but all of King's kicks seem to go right. Seems easy enough to aim a little to the left but IDK.

I would politely include Harvin in this discussion. His consistency really fell off in the second half of the year.

I wonder if there is something in the kicking practice routine that has introduced the equivalent of a golfer's "yips" into these guys' heads.

Once you get the yips, it's hard to shake them.

"His consistency really fell off..." After yesterday's record setting performance, its a wonder his leg didn't fall off. What was it? 13 punts?

Maybe someone slacked off after being awarded a schollie and didn’t give a damn anymore

We need someone who can kick it out the end zone on kickoffs. We killed ourselves with field position.

Does anybody know why we did not give Cliff Gandis a chance? He was on the roster this year. Per his bio:
"Named South Carolina Specialist of the Year as a senior in 2017 by S.C. Football Coaches Association … Two-time all-region selection … Ranked as high as No. 3 nationally among place kickers by prokicker.com … Kicked a school-record 54-yard field goal as a senior"

That is puzzling.
