2020 Recruiting

Both Sims and Bermudez are still very much in play for Tech, from what I've read. The intriguing part will be if they can find a way to take both Bermudez AND Morton if Bermudez decides to go with the Jackets.

Tech's secondary is looking like it's going to be perpetually filthy good under Collins.
We can get them in. The early enrollees will count against 2019 numbers and there's going to be a ton of attrition. The coaches are aware of it and managing accordingly.

Do you know how many we’re expecting to leave? Even a rough number? If we sign 25 to 27 which I’ve heard, what does that do to our 85 count?

A lot but I don't think most of them have made their final decision yet. Most likely, it'll happen after spring practice completes. All the new enrollees plus Clayton, Ezzard and Derrik Allen are all eligible to practice this spring and that'll amp up the competition level a good bit.

As players get an idea of where they fall in the pecking order, expect many of them to have frank conversations with the coach about their limited chance of significant playing time and take the hint to leave. If I had to pick a number, I'd put it as at least 10 or more.

I have no inside knowledge on who is transferring but it wouldn't surprise me if both Lucas Johnson and Tobias Oliver decide to transfer.

I would think there is an incentive to transfer now and enroll at your new school in January in order to participate in Spring practice. This is probably more important if there ia a chance for immediate eligibility.

I think people need to appreciate that this is a good class no matter how it finishes. Even if we only sign those currently committed, lose Gibbs, Wiggles and maybe one of our lessor recruits (just hypothetical), it is still a very good class. It is still the best class since 2007 and in the top 2 or 3 in the last 20 years. Add in the transfers and it is a special class. It meets a ton of the needs of the roster at the OL and DL position and sets up our WR and DBs to be top tier groups.

Two things are bothering me: 1) Some are making Gibbs a "Deal breaker" and it seems to be for no purpose except allows them to be disappointed about something. "oh it is a good class but of course we lost the player we really wanted". I've heard it from Tech fans but also from the media. I promise you the media is looking for anyway to spin Collins' recruiting as a negative. They will carry water for UGA and the SEC as much as they can.

2) Many are already counting Morton, Sims, and Jayson Jones. Heck, I've been doing it and told myself I needed to stop. There is no reason to be disappointed if we don't sign those guys. It would move the class from very good to great so it would be exciting but we need to appreciate the good job that has been done.

It really is incredible what Collins has done in a year. He has established something internally and externally that is working and will pay dividends. HS players in GA now consider and are looking to come to Tech. I've seen social media posts where they are begging Tech to come watch them or see their film.

So basically I like my Juice without pulp and I don't complain if my glass isn't 100% full.

Count me in the crowd that would be really bummed if we lost Gibbs. Doesn’t wreck the class but it would be a very big loss. I have his senior film on par with the best RBs in the country for this class. He’s tailor made for the spread and has the kind of elusiveness that will be essential as we continue to try to build a competent OL. Have him above Ivey in this class for guys I want to sign which is saying something given the current depth charts at their respective positions.

To a lesser extent, but still a factor, would be the optics of hanging onto an elite kid who had the factories knocking on his door all winter. Kind of a “we’re not ööööing around” statement.

My point is it is great to be excited if he does sign but silly to be disappointed. If he had been ranked in the top 100 last year, I doubt he commits to us and you never have him to "lose". So yes, I'll go ape if he does sign but will move on if he doesn't. We signed enough top players to be excited about the class and show that GT is making in-roads in Ga and recruiting in general.

Why were we not in the mix for Braun?

He seemed to have a good relationship with the Florida staff and OL coach, and Pittman.

Many (most?) kids seem to make their ultimate choice based on those relationships. That seems to be what Collins gets.

Many of them only consider a particular type of school: SEC, top 10 program, near home, etc; but then choose the school our of the ones that fit that criteria based on relationships. FWIW.

I think this is part of what some of the self-defeatist "you can't recruit well here, it is what is" Tech fans don't get. There are a number of reasons why players commit to schools, but the relationships built with coaches and the culture they see being fostered are often pivotal.

Sure, a certain percentage of recruits will be off the table due to academics, and we're never going to get the recruit whose top priority is playing in front of 80-100k every week, but there's a lot to sell at a school like Tech, and if you're doing it right, you will appeal to a number of very talented recruits.

Tech fans will always find something to bitch about. If 95% of things break our way, our fans will complain about the 5% that didn't. Nevermind the fact that if we're losing recruits to Florida, it's likely a sign that things are moving in the right direction

Yeah, it bothered me most when we lost players to Stanford or Duke or those types: If you can't motivated those types to go to GT over those schools, then you don't understand how to sell GT.
