Incoming Transfer

and bama played against ut each year. Granted brent was not scouting the ut OL but still i am sure he has seen enough

However. It is a fact he was pushed out of the main rotation this year. Only started 3 games. So there is a reason for that. He is likely a solid player that will be a big help for is this year but not next level material etc.

Nonetheless this is exactly what we need and i hope the staff can leave him at his more natural position at G vs tackle.
Do not assume the Tennessee coaching staff knows what they are doing. Their mediocre records with Top 25 classes including a loss to Georgia State demonstrate that they do not.

He gonna get in our program and get big and skrong. NFL bound

I wouldn't put too much stock into those comments. Just like StinGTalk and other football forums, there are posters who have ZERO idea what they're talking about.

I’m not trying to hear all that noise... Truth is OL was a major liability for much of 2019. We aren’t going to be able to roll out a bunch of true freshman and think that will fix it either. Need solid, experienced guys to log snaps while these talented freshman learn how to play P5 football. Great addition!

Exactly, he is an upgrade anyway you cut it. It likely means that we only need 2 of the Freshmen to contribute to have a solid group and might allow us to redshirt more OL than planned.

What I like best is he should be able to continue the examples of Davis and Southers and help teach the young guys how to play and prepare at a high level and be a coach off the field.

Also, we rotate more than anyone so this will help depth. That means we can sit a guy out of a series if he tweaks something rather than have to play and risk aggravating the injury into something more serious. Depth will keep the players, particularly freshmen without P5 conditioning, from having to play to exhaustion and beyond will make us more effective later in the game and less likely to get injured. And depth will help in practice to challenge the D.

The new redshirt rule will really help with so many freshman offensive lineman. We can play each freshman four games and keep their redshirt while gaining game experience and providing depth.

Honest question. Does Alabama or Clemson fans care about redshirting? Worrying so much about redshirting every player is for teams recruiting predominantly diamonds in the rough and leftovers. That aint gonna be us under CGC. I expect future recruiting to be full of players that will be too good to keep off the field and likely to go pro early anyway, so redshirting everyone year one (IMHO) isnt going to matter very much.

Now having said that, I admit OLine is the place where it is most likely to have some utility.

A kid is ready to help the team win as a freshman or not. If he is, no one redshirts him.

The factories will still redshirt if the kid is good, but not good enough to crack the depth chart, even if he only going to stay 3 years. It is not that unusual for a 3rd year soph to go pro.

Also, a certain percentage of factory kids are projects. They are going to stay 5 years. You need a certain number of 5th year players whether you expect them to go pro or not.

Worth discussing. I pulled up an Alabama depth chart. First hit was "ourlads". No idea on accuracy.

If we look at the starters, there are 5 redshirts and 17 not redshirts. The two deep has more redshirts, 17 redshirts vs 27 not redshirts, but still relatively few redshirts.

There are only two RSSR on the two deep. One starter, one backup. Meanwhile, on Alabama remember, there are 5 true freshmen starting and 9 on the two deep.

If a huge number if not most of our freshmen are not in the two deep come September, this class probably isnt as good as we think it is.

And while players not ready to play will get redshirted same as Alabama, the reality is that few players will be around or contribute in year 5.

As an FYI, Clemson is similar. Less true fresh on the 2 deep though.

They have only 8 redshirt starters, 14 not redshirts. The two deep is 22/22. They are playing less freshmen (5) and have more rssr (4) than Alabama but still, almost no 5 year contributors.

I understand and I agree that if you are recruiting talented freshmen, you should play them as soon as possible.

One thing though is it is easier to do that when those freshmen are 5-stars or top 100 players.

For the OL and DL specifically, one of the differences between a 5-star and 3-star is the 5-star is typically physically ready to play while the 3-star might need more development and strength.

If they can contribute in a meaningful way as a freshman, then play them. I’ve never been a big fan of playing a true freshman on special teams only...unless they are the returner, long snapper or kicker/punter. A decent guideline is if they’re good enough to crack the 2-deep then you burn the shirt. Of course all of that depends on the player, the position and several other factors.

I actually prefer 3 and 4 star players to 5 star dudes. One, the top rated players often come feeling all entitled. Two, Lew the human Jack Russell Terrier Caralla can put the weight onto the "lesser" players the right way the first time. If you look at the college seniors and pro rookies, the 5 star guys are grossly underrepresented among the elites.

I think the 5star is more about who they are as freshmen, not as developed upper-classmen. The 5 star is "ready to play."

Saban has said so many of the 5* guys don't improve beyond their entry yr. level. I've not for a long time been that impressed with having a 5* kid.
