Offseason Attrition Thread

Not sure that I’m a huge fan of open speculation around who might/should leave. Especially weak to include true freshman who redshirted and didn’t play.....so what? That’s a very common thing. Plenty of great players and high draft picks r/s their first year. Maybe we use this thread to capture actual departure new or actual rumors that we didn’t start?

Two things that always feel icky to me are speculating who might leave and speculating on recruits' grades. Not that I don't engage in such from time to time, but I don't feel great about it.

None of these kids SHOULD leave if they know what's best for them (unless they can get a scholarship to a more prestigious school). But these are the ones who, based on football, you could imagine might look at it.

Yeah, like others I'm not good with speculation except maybe talking about numbers at a position. It would be good to have a thread though to discuss as it happens.

Did want to mention that I think there is a cap on the total number of players you can have on the team INCLUDING walkons; so walkons can/do matter. I think the number is 105 so that gives you room for 20 walkons.

Perhaps he can continue to grow at receiver and will have a place there. He's going to have compete with a loaded crop of freshman, though. I can't see him at running back, especially with how deep we already are there. If Gibbs comes, we're likely looking at the former Gatorade Player of the Year in GA (Griffin) at 3rd string.
My opinion won't be the popular one but I wouldn't at all be surprised to see Griffin as the starter getting the most reps by the time we get 3 or 4 games into the season. He was solid this year and had more burst than Mason but Mason was so tough to bring down between the tackles. Given the nature of OL this year, Mason had to break a lot of tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage but his lack of speed turned home runs into 15 or 20 yard gains.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I don't like Mason a lot...I do. But if our line is able to open holes better this year and I think they will be able to do so, Griffin's going to take some of those the distance and that will earn him more PT. He already got a lot of reps in obvious passing downs last year and did a really nice job at picking up blitzes so he appears to have that part down. Another year of getting bigger, stronger, faster and I think you might see Mr. Griffin becoming the primary stud during much of the game with Mason getting a lot of reps when you need those hard-fought 2, 3 or 4 yards.

I could see that. If he signs, I could also see Gibbs surpassing them both.

Without going too deep into this tangential rabbithole, I believe there is room for Mason/Howard/Griffin/Gibbs to all contribute with their different skills. I believe (like you) that next year will be a different situation than last year. I am hoping Oliver fills a hybrid wr/rb role. I believe the best way for any of the above to get snaps is to be the best pass pro blocker of the group.

And that normally takes a year to figure out. You rarely see anybody start fully as a freshman RB.

There's plenty of room for carries and playing time at RB, especially if they both can pass block which will be the determining factor IMO. Even a 60-40 split is a fair amount of carries for the main back.

edit- just read Techbert's post d'oh!

Better coming from you, big guy.

Some perspective:

wtf

* Yeah, 9-10 isn't crazy and even 12-13 given our roster makeup is understandable during a transition.
* It also seems like some are forgetting Tech always seems to have a lot of attrition: 5-7 every year. There is a reason that we only had 9 SRs.
* Also, GT honored every offer that had been made before Collins was hired. 2 choose to not come but that wasn't because they were told they couldn't. Most schools don't do that and don't hinder their coach that way. FSU turned away at least 2 maybe more away. UofL last year turned many away.

One source says the average number of walkons on Division I FBS football teams is 30+. I remember one of the sports reporters imply that Clemson has about 185 players in their football program. I read somewhere that the roster limit is 125 for Division I. If all of these are true, Clemson is way above average at 185 and/or about 60 of their players are not on the roster.

I should probably get back to reading the whole thread before commenting.

I like to see kids graduate! Go get advanced degrees! Get high $$$ jobs!

And make room for the bad-ass football players Collins has signed and will sign,

Just win.

I know we hate UGA and all that, but I like the way they play 3 or 4 running backs extensively during the game. Also, you are probably going to have a RB or two nicked up most of the time. In addition to Mason and Griffin and possibly Gibbs, I like what I saw of Smith before he was injured and I heard Ellison looked great in practice.
