Offseason Attrition Thread

I am surprised we have not had more transfer portal entrants. I thought players transferring would want to go through Spring practice with their new teams.

I think there will be a few players leave the team without entering the portal. I could easily see an upper classman who has only a year or two of eligibility left not being interested in trying to make a new team when the NFL is not a real option. For them it would be better to stay at GT and get the degree and get on with life.

In that situation (and I know it varies for everyone so this is a generalization), I'd get my Tech BS then transfer somewhere else for an MS. Can't argue with a free degree.

I would think that Tech has a higher number of athletes that use football as a means to obtain the education than are dreaming of the NFL.

If they follow that path, do they count against the 85 ceiling?

Only 2% of college football players make the NFL Tech is lucky to have more than a handful make a roster.

Yeah, seems that it is clearly an indication that what is going on at the Edge is special and everyone that has experienced it seems to want to be a part of it. There was a lot of reason to believe, but this is just one more very solid data point.

The whole culture, for example making football fun, is almost certainly the real deal. I dont expect a lot of voluntary leaving. Of course, we have to do what is best for the team.

I wont be surprised if we have a lot of guys medically retire rather than play somewhere else.

What percentage of P5 scholarship college football players make the NFL? I don't think including all college football players is fair when we play in one of the 5 premier college football leagues in the world. It's still going to be a low number...but I'm quite certain that many more than 2% play a down in the NFL. That's less than 2 per roster of 85 scholarship players.....which is simply not the case for most P5 football programs who see a handful drafted every year.

I believe that stat is pretty accurate. Once you get outside of Bama, LSU, Clemson, etc. there are not as many kids that make an NFL roster and/or play meaningful professional snaps as you think. I recall from my time the stat was closer to 1%....even less who make it to a second contract. Pro football is a tough business.

That's assuming they're good enough for a team to want them.
From experience, lots of teams want 2 years at least unless you're good enough.

What about FCS? Or Div II?

There is precedent for that. Weimerskirch grad transferred to West Florida. You gotta be pretty dedicated to both your academics and football, though. I imagine a lot of guys just choose to start their career instead.
