ESPN Out They Mind

Jerry Rice wasn't exactly chopped liver, I am with you on Fitzgerald though. I would rather have Julio Jones than Fitzgerald.

I think some of you are forgetting how much of a beast Fitzgerald was at Pitt. He had more TDs and almost as many yards in his two years as CJ did in three. Larry had 22(!) receiving TDs his last year.

Julio’s college stats were ok, not great. He had 15 TDs in 3 years. Fitz had 22 in 1 year.

I think some of you are forgetting that Fitz college stats were in the big least.

Rice
finished the 1984 season with 112 catches for 1,845 yards and 27 touchdowns
also playing lesser competition.

In another 150 years, Calvin will be on the list because ESPN won't remember they made this list. They only thing they're good for is broadcasting, the rest of it is worthless chatter.

I don't know about Biletnikoff since that is well before my time, but I wouldn't put him on a college all-time list over Rice, Fitzgerald and Moss.
Well, the dude was good enough that the top receiver in college football wins the Biletnikoff Award, so that oughta be a hint as to how good he was.

Yeah but the top coach wins the Bobby Dodd award, and we learned in a previous thread that Bobby Dodd was a bad coach who ruined Georgia Tech football.

The Bobby Dodd Coach award is for coaches...notice they don't give a Bobby Dodd AD award and there's a reason. Dodd as a coach was legendarily good at GT. Dodd as an AD was not so much.

I read those posts and I don't know that anybody ever claimed Dodd was a bad coach. If they did make that case, they're stupid. But the argument can easily be made that he was epically bad as an AD with some of the decisions he made...specifically, the decision to leave the SEC and go independent.

And Julio was on a stacked team, which made it hard to double team him and impossible to triple team him. The idea that Julio would have gotten 23 TDs playing for Syracuse or WVU is pretty ridiculous to me, but unprovable so whatever.

I love Calvin because he is one of our own and he was great, but given that he didn't win anything significant with us, he didn't win anything with Detroit, and his career was brief, I think he will be one of those names that never gets enough recognition as time passes. He had a great run, but not enough to be listed with the all-time greats IMO.

Obviously this is personal opinion, but 9 years in the NFL is plenty long enough to know he wasn't a fluke, flash in the pan kind of guy. If I'm picking the best receiver for my all time team, playing 20 years vs 9 does not matter. Also its not his fault he got picked by Detroit, and I don't blame him for retiring earlier than some- he would have been stuck with Detroit well past his prime and never won anything of significance, and he had plenty of money at that point. Hang it up and save your body from any more unneccesary wear and tear and enjoy life.

Well, since no one playing for Syracuse or WVU got 23 TDs that year whatever point you are trying to make is pretty ridiculous to me; but unprovable so whatever.

I think he'll be remembered as a freakish talent who was probably tougher to cover than any receiver ever, but yeah, he's not going to have the numbers and other tangible accomplishments that many others have had. Most of that isn't really his fault, but it's the way it is.

He'll always be a fixture when looking at some of the most improbable catches of all time, though, so I don't think he'll ever completely fade away.

Totally agree in terms of how things may go for his reputation in the future due to wins, stats, etc., but I think he is the best receiver ever. I take him as my first receiver if I am building a team.

I get your reasoning but.....Barry Sanders...Dan Merino... Jim Kelly..hell just being associated with the Lions should get you a prize. Especially when you got a subpar dwag qb throwing to you your whole career.
