Stumbled across this while looking up if he had said anything about athletics. It wasn't reported in the AJC or the usual places.

President Ángel Cabrera has incorporated the position of director of Athletics, occupied by Todd Stansbury, into the president’s cabinet.

The 14-person leadership body is made up of senior administrators from academic and administrative units. Members include Institute vice presidents, division directors, and college deans. See the full cabinet.

“Athletics is an important part of the entire Georgia Tech community, and having the director of Athletics on the President’s Cabinet reflects that,” said Cabrera. “We welcome Todd Stansbury’s insights as we begin this more integrated approach.”

For quite awhile I've been convinced the major problems with GT Athletics were the President and AD. Everything else was shuffling deck chairs. Todd Stansbury seems to be the AD that GT has been missing since Homer Rice. The question is ... will the new President ignore the athletic side like Bud Peterson ... or view it as part of the mission like John Crecine (President during Homer Rice's tenure) did. So far so good from Angel Cabrera. Assuming Cabrera is indeed the right man for the job that makes Josh Pastner the last piece that needs to be changed out to complete a total GTAA overhaul of all the positions that matter.

This is awesome news.

Peterson would show up to games but he absolutely did nothing to help athletics. Hell, he’d refuse to even talk about athletics in meetings. He was terrible.
Peterson was a great disappointment. I had high hopes when he was announced and they mentioned he played football in college.

The President during Rice's first 7 years was Joseph Pettit. Then 5 years of Crecine then 5 years of Clough before he retired in 97.

How was the AD not in the cabinet beforehand? That seems ludicrous to have a cabinet and not include that position.

President Cabrera seems like the kind of guy who would make an enthusiastic speech when a mob of drunken-adrenaline crazed students dump a torn down field goal on his front lawn.

Clough hired Braine as I recall. That tells me all I need to know.

Yeah, I have a fuzzy recollection that Clough was no friend to the AA. Can't remember why I think that, though.

I like clough from my interactions with him, but have no knowledge of the inner workings of such things.

Peterson definitely had other priorities and athletics was far down the list. When he came to GT, he was on the board of the NSF and was very heavily focused on expanding the Tech Square area and research. He'd inherited DRad and CPJ and pretty much left them alone. He used the presidential suite at BDS for major recruitment of more research dollars. Bud was a very effective president for many aspects of GT but athletics was not a high priority for him.
Glad to hear that the new prez has elevated the AD role.
