Can’t lead with the crown of the helmet regardless of where it hits. That was textbook targeting with that definition.

It sucks, but it was an easy call using college rules.
You can lead with your helmet if you hit his shoulder which he did, imo. I think the first thing his helmet hits is the shoulder pad.

Show your work. I have never heard the rule distinguish what body part is hit, just leading with the crown.

Leading with the crown, but that was so ticky-tack you have to let it go.

Yeah, the problem I have here is that the call came on review. This is one of those hits that the refs in live action could tell wasn't a big deal and so no flags. But then the lawyers get involved and play it in slo-mo and throw the kid out of the game.

All that said, the game has changed and it's no longer "lower your head"... gotta keep those eyes up

Yeah. Seemed like he had to duck his head to the shoulder pad to avoid hitting the WR in the actual head when the WR lowered his head.

Its a rough call, but I dont question it.

Not what the expert dude said. Leading with helmet plus forcible contact anywhere. Needs to be room for interpretation though. A hit like that shouldnt affect the natty.

I'm with corndog here, it was obvious from space. They didn't need to review it. The rule sucks, but that's the call.

Not what the broadcast official said. Said helmet to helmet doesn’t matter if you lead with the crown. *shrug*

JRjr
I’m not arguing the crown of his helmet didn’t make contact after he launched but I’m fairly confident there’s a further nuance to the rule it must be initial contact, too.

could be mistaken.

Unless its a running back or the receiver is in motion, blah blah. It's a dumb rule birthed by knee jerk reactions on player safety pussies.

False start may have bailed out Clemson there.

Edit: or not. I don’t get all these little inside dinks.

Agreed. It only gets called in space on plays on receivers. It is consistent in how it’s called, but not consistent with the wording.

LSU should get an unsportsmanlike penalty for its band playing when the line is set and through the Clemson snaps.
