Clemson making bank

What’s stupid is trying to solve a problem GT doesn’t have. GT has no shortage of applicants, and already has extreme high quality applicants.
Dropping its acceptance rate from 18% to about 12% is not gonna do anything for Tech.
And the marginal applicants which GT might get because it won a national championship are far more likely to be in the rejected crowd than the accepted one anyways.
It appears you're looking at only one side of the equation, though...typical of some of the engineers I know.

You're looking at it from a purely academic standpoint. And it is indeed true that GT has no shortage of 'high quality ACADEMIC applicants'. But do we likewise have a strong supply of high quality academic applicants who might also have an interest in athletics? Based up on my own visual observations of the average fan age at football games, I would venture that we do not.

So would a strong football program potentially draw interest from those high academic youth with an interest in later becoming season ticket holders and alumni who donate annually to the athletic department? I can't answer that question but it stands to reason it could only help and not hurt.

I'd argue that GT has a national brand problem. There are loads of people who don't realize that GT is an exceptional school.

Yes but think about how many more people at the Natl Science Foundation would learn about us. The research grants would double.

GT's endowment is about 300% more than Clemson. We may not be making bank from athletics but we are doing pretty well in other areas like research. Research funding dwarfs athletic revenue and it's not even close.

of about 140,000 living GT alums, about 35k to 40k give to the school. Only about 7k give to Athletics. We have to get more people involved.

Someone needs to research how to win more football games.

GT simply needs to take more in state applicants.

Unfortunately, many equate GEORGIA TECH with Louisiana Tech , Virginia Tech, Michigan Tech, Texas Tech. We have not done well in convincing the public that there is a big difference.

Shouldn’t this be posted on the “Research fan board” instead of the GT sports board?

What Tech needs to do that few, if any, schools can replicate is leverage our research machine.
  1. Make it a research project to track how players gain muscle mass and optimize their S&C.
  2. Calibrate an AI to look at down, distance, the clock, the score, the formation, player sizes, temperature, wind speed, and more to give coaches a ranked list of play calls most likely to succeed on a tablet, updated fast enough for signalling in. Call it Coach Burdell.
  3. Use an AI to evaluate all game film on opponents and provide summary reports for coaches to speed up game prep. Use it to tag unusually effective or poor blockers, etc
  4. Similarly, use an AI to optimize how we use our resources in recruiting.

Which is stupid. A good football team is THE BEST marketing tool for a school. Next would be a basketball team. Look at how many people learned about UMBC when they beat UVA
Right. Just look at Alabama. Once was just another 4th tier engineering destination, now, an engineering Mecca and real competition for our prowess.
