Apparently two of our four recruits ranked higher than Gibbs were both in the 2000 class. They were Hobie Holiday and Brandon Sumner. I remember Holiday but I don't recall him playing at that level. I don't remember Sumner at all. Anyone know the details on what happened with these two?

Hobie was a bust and never played to his potential. Brandon Sumner was a backup and may have transferred (can't remember).

It appears Sumner transferred to UCF after the 2001 season. Only played one mediocre season in 2004.

Maybe it's the speed hitting the holes or something else, but Gibbs reminds me of Etienne in some ways.
Probably the speed in hitting the hole. Their running styles after that are not super similar. Etienne is a lot stronger, but Gibbs is definitely shiftier.

I think Christian McCaffrey may be a better comparison, although I doubt Gibbs has that type of receiving ability. Neither is particularly big, and both can change direction without losing much momentum. Check out their HS measurables and rankings:

Gibbs:
#70 ovr
#2 APB
5'11"
194 lb

McCaffrey
#77 ovr
#3 APB
6'0"
193 lb

FWIW, Etienne was the #26 running back (LOL).

Reports out of practice for the UA All-American game was that he was lighting it up receiving out of the backfield. Great routes and none of the LB's could cover him.

there is some really good film of him running routes in UA AA game practice. Shaking elite DBs out of their boots.

Was listening to 680 yesterday afternoon and they had a recruiting guy on (I think it may have been Rusty Mansell from 247) and he compared Gibbs to Kamara ...

Speaking of 680, it wasn't long ago that any time they talked about Gibbs it was basically "Does GT have any shot at keeping him?", and the answer was always "No way in Hell!" Great "flagship" station right there.

I listened to them for about 5 minutes on Wed (Chuck and Nerf) talk about signing day. The setup made it sound like they were going to discuss GT in depth and especially about Gibbs. About the time Nerf got out "Gibbs did sign with GT", Chuck said something like "nice class for them and what they are trying to do" and then quickly changed the topic to UGA. And the comment was so vague and stupid that it didn't make any sense but he continued to make his point for the next 5 minutes.

As you say, every media personality for the last year has said that GT would not hold on to Gibbs and then when he signs with us, it is "he signed, meh; let's talk about the new coke fountains in the UGA dorms"

They used him better than Bama did.
Yeah, did Bama ever screw that up, but didn't really hurt them. Ingram, Henry et al did pretty well.

Kamara came out of the same middle school program that I coached in (same as the aforementioned Austin Reiter of the Chiefs).
He was 3 years younger than Austin, but I got to watch him because my daughter was a cheerleader. He was freaking incredible, and yes, Gibbs is exactly as I remember the young Kamara. -- shifty with unbelievable acceleration.
He seemed to score every 2-3 times he touched the ball. However, they spread around the carries because he shared the backfield with another future NFLer (Peyton Barber).
Those games were fun to watch. Hopefully, I'll see something similar on Grant Field starting this fall.

This - Kamara is what comes to mind for me as well.
The comp I like is Dalvin Cook. Cook’s highlight shows his natural running ability and vision allowing him to avoid hard contact and run away from people. Gibbs is the same way... he uses vision, balance and quick acceleration to bust long runs where he’s barely touched. There are a few in the Gibbs highlight where he runs strong around the goal line, but most are 30+ yard TD runs.

I also watched Kamara’s HS highlights and I was very surprised at how physical he ran in HS. He definitely ran away from people too, but there were a few highlights where he lowered his shoulder and put a hurt on guys.

...but of course these are all just highlights, which only tell part of the story.
